DOUBLEHEADER VICTORY GIVES RADFORD SWEEP AGAINST UNC ASHEVILLE

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Radford baseball team won a pair of doubleheader games against UNC Asheville on Friday at Greenwood Field. The doubleheader victory completed the sweep for the Highlanders.

Radford scored 11 runs in the ninth inning or later in both games. The Highlanders plated four insurance runs in the ninth inning in an 8-2 victory in game one and later scored three in the 12th inning of the second game, which gave them a 7-4 edge.

GAME ONE
Each team scored a run in their respective offensive frames to begin the day. Radford took the lead in the second inning as Will Harless scored on a bases loaded walk. The Bulldogs had four walks and one hit batter through the first 1.1 innings of the game. The 2-1 lead eventually grew to 4-1 before the frame ended.

Andrew Nardi, who got the nod in game two of the series, settled in and pitched five innings. He only allowed one run on four hits and struck out one in a winning effort.

The Bulldogs cut the lead in half when Danny Wilson scored on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Neither team crossed the plate until the Highlanders added four to its 4-2 lead in the ninth inning.

Colby Higgerson began the inning getting walked on four pitches. He scored from first when Kyle Butler roped a pitch down the right field line for a double and moved to third on the throw. Horwitz drove him in with a sacrifice fly to right field and gave Radford a 6-2 lead.

J.D. Mundy hit his third home run of the series and drove in his sixth RBI one batter later. Andrew Szamski reaped the benefits of scoring after he reached with a single on the at-bat before Mundy. The Mundy long ball gave Radford an 8-2 lead.

Cameron Fritz had already thrown 2.2 innings and shut down the Bulldogs in order in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

GAME TWO
The second game of the day saw a two-hour weather delay, a couple of lead changes and three extra innings. No matter the obstacles, Radford came out victorious in the 12-inning contest.

In an inning prolonged by errors, the Highlanders took advantage of them. Will Harless reached on a dropped fly ball by Dominic Freeberger in left field. He made it to second and moved to third on a failed pick off attempt. After a strikeout, Colby Higgerson was walked to put runners on the corners with one out and Kyle Butler at the plate.

Butler broke the 4-4 tie with an RBI single to center field in the 12th. Harless scored easily and Higgerson made it all the way to third. However, an errant throw by the UNC Asheville center fielder allowed the Highlander shortstop to score.

Spencer Horwitz increased the 6-4 advantage with a sacrifice fly that plated Butler for a 7-4 lead.

Derek Domecq, who kept the tie at bay for two innings, came back to the bump for a third. He was able to get back-to-back groundouts and just needed to sit down Tyler Serricchio. However, the Bulldog pinch hitter prolonged the game with a double down the left field line. It didn't matter as Domecq ended the game with his second strikeout of the contest.

The Bulldogs had a 2-0 lead for seven innings after scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. That all changed in the ninth when Radford needed two to keep the game going. Adam Whitacre cut the lead in half with an RBI single that scored David Bryant, who reached with a leadoff double.

Andrew Szamski was at the dish with an 0-2 count and swung through a breaking ball. The ball got away from the catcher and allowed pinch runner Garrett Matheny to score and tie the game. Szamski reached first base safely and the bases remained full for the most dangerous man in the series, J.D. Mundy.

With no base open the Bulldogs had to pitch to the Highlanders' designated hitter. He made them pay with a two-run single to left center field that put the Highlanders on top 4-2.

The Mundy hit was practically nulled as UNC Asheville scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth. However, Graham Firoved was able to send the game to extras when he got Greg Gasparro to fly out to left field.

After Firoved walked the first batter of the 10th, Domecq came in and retired eight of the final nine batters.

STAT OF THE SERIES
J.D. Mundy went 8-for-11 (.727) with three home runs, four runs scored and eight RBIs in the three-game series.
