RADFORD’S SEASON ENDS ON HEARTBREAKING WALK-OFF LOSS TO NO. 4 WINTHROP

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Radford softball team fell to No. 4 Winthrop, 4-3, in 10 innings on Friday and was eliminated from the Big South Championship in Buies Creek, N.C.

With the game tied at three in the 10th inning, Ashley Westbrooks led off the inning with a single to left field. She later stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Sabrina Shroades was called on to pinch-hit with two outs and a runner on third.

Shroades hit an 0-2 pitch that went in between Ellie Rowe at first and Talia Douglas at second. Rowe scooped up the ball but was too far in the middle of the field to make a play. Shroades was safe at first and Westbrooks crossed the plate for the walk-off win.

The back-and-forth game saw Radford take the lead in the first inning when Sydney Fisher scored on a Douglas bloop single. The lead held through 2.2 innings until Winthrop scored a pair of two-out runs in the third inning and took a 2-1 lead.

Hunter Mundy had what seemed to be the biggest hit of the game in the top of the sixth inning. She plated Destiny Freeman and Maggie Rowe with a single up the middle and put the Highlanders back in front, 3-2.

The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Brooke Ellison hit an RBI single to left field before taking the final lead in the 10th.

Huffman threw a career-high 9.2 innings and only allowed four hits and one walk. The senior struck out a pair. She even got the team out of some tough jams with runners on base. The biggest came in the bottom of the seventh when Winthrop had runners on every base and one out.

The King William, Va., native picked up a huge infield fly out and then was able to get Westbrooks to fly out to left field and end the threat.

Radford's biggest offensive threat in extra innings came in the eighth when Radford had a pair of base runners but fell victim to a double play.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Freeman led all players with a 3-for-4 game with a season-high two doubles. Medlam tallied another two-hit performance in her final game as a Highlander. Another senior, M. Rowe, also tallied a hit. Hunter Mundy went 2-for-4 and drove in two of the three runs.

MOMENT OF THE GAME

QUOTABLE
"It's never easy to leave it all on the field and walk away on the wrong side of the scoreboard, but that's how it will go for every team but one," Creasy said. "I'm proud of the way we played in these four games this week. Our three seniors left it all on the field and I'm grateful for their contributions to the program."
