HORWITZ GOES YARD IN LOSS TO NO. 20 N.C. STATE

RALEIGH, N.C. – An early lead slipped away and the Radford baseball team fell, 9-3, to No. 20 N.C. State at Doak Field on Saturday afternoon.

Just like on Friday night, the Highlanders (23-23) gave themselves plenty of baserunners to work with, but this time it was by way of base hits instead of walks. Radford recorded at least one hit in each of the first four innings with a power surge coming in the third.

Following a single and a stolen base for senior shortstop Colby Higgerson, junior first baseman Spencer Horwitz launched a two-run home run off the top of the right field wall to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

The Wolfpack (36-12) responded with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning to tie things up, however. A fielding error and a double put two runners in scoring position and both players proceeded to score on back-to-back RBI ground outs.

N.C. State then took the lead for good in the fifth inning. Another error kicked off the frame before Jonny Butler singled and Will Wilson lined a 3-run homer over the left field fence, making it 5-2 in favor of the home team.

Radford pulled one run back on a Will Harless RBI double that scored J.D. Mundy, but the Wolfpack tacked on four more runs in the seventh to give them plenty of breathing room.

Senior lefty Andrew Nardi got his fourth start of the season on the mound and he gave up just two earned runs on seven hits across 5.0 innings. Derek Domecq tossed 1.2 innings out of the bullpen and Brandon Feathers threw 1.1 innings in relief as well.

Horwitz (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI), Mundy (2-for-3, R) and Harless (2-for-3, RBI, BB) each recorded multi-hit efforts while David Bryant, Matt Roth and Colby Higgerson had one hit each.
