RADFORD OUTHITS CAMPBELL, UNABLE TO AVOID DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Despite outhitting Campbell in both games, the Radford softball team dropped the pair of doubleheader games on Saturday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium. The first was a 6-2 contest in favor of Campbell and the second saw the Camels score three unanswered in a 3-2 series finale score.

GAME ONE
Jessie Marvin retired the first nine batters she faced to open the day. She gave up a single to Bri Bryant that led off the fourth inning. Bryant move moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a Kynadi Tipler single. Tipler stole second before Marvin was able to get the second out of the inning.

The sophomore was one out away from her fourth scoreless inning, but an infield error allowed Bryant and Tipler to score. That gave Campbell a 2-0 lead.

The Camels extended their lead to 5-0 when Claudia Ware hit a bases clearing triple with one out in the fifth inning. Ware later scored on an infield groundout, which made it 6-0.

Radford strung together a couple of hits in the top of the sixth and plated a pair of runs cutting into the deficit. Hannah Medlam and Talia Douglas tallied hits and went on to score on sacrifice flies courtesy of Destiny Freeman and Hunter Mundy.

Hannah Morris entered for Jessie Marvin and pitched a scoreless sixth inning.

Medlam picked up her third hit of the contest in the seventh but that's all Radford could get in the final frame.

STAT OF THE GAME
Medlam had half of the Highlanders' hits with a 3-for-4 performance that included a double and a run scored. Fisher, Douglas and Ellie Rowe had the other hits.

GAME TWO
The Highlanders struck first in game two as Talia Douglas reached on with a two-out single and advanced into scoring position when Megan Mozingo, the Campbell shortstop sailed the throw to first. Douglas later scored when Maggie Rowe singled over the outstretched glove of the Camel second baseman. Douglas was on her horse and scored from second, which gave Radford a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Jessie Marvin, who earned the start in the second game of the day as well as the first, had at least one base runner through the first three innings. No matter the runners aboard, she kept the Highlander lead entact. That changed in the fourth when Kayla Fredendall hit a solo home run to left center field in the fourth inning.

Radford was close to taking a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth when Douglas hit a one-out shot to left field. It was going over the wall in left field when Bri Bryant jumped up and robbed Douglas of her go-ahead RBIs. Fisher, who led off the fifth inning with a single, was on second and appeared to tag up and run to third, but she was somehow called out and the double play ended the scoring chance.

Bryant wasn't done doing damage to Radford. She drove in the go-ahead run (at the time) with an RBI double and later scored the difference-making run when Fredendall singled to right field with two outs in the fifth.

Radford was close to tying the game in the seventh. They had the bases loaded twice but were only able to plate one run when Medlam drove in pinch-runner Callie Morgan with a one-out single.

The regular-season ended in a jaw-dropping fashion as Douglas roped a pitch right back at the pitcher with the bases loaded. Haley Hutchins caught the ball and tossed it to the third baseman, who doubled up Lindsay Hunter and ended the game.

STAT OF THE GAME
Radford outhit Campbell in both games. The Highlanders tallied 10 in game two as five came from Tapia and Fisher. Tapia went 3-for-3, while Fisher went 2-for-3.

UP NEXT
Radford will have a chance for revenge on Campbell in the opening round of the Big South Tournament on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. The Camels clinched the No. 3 seed, while Radford takes the No. 6 seed in the double elimination tournament.
