RADFORD CLOSES OUT BARCELONA SPORTS INVITATIONAL WITH SWEEP OF BETHUNE-COOKMAN

HOUSTON, Texas – The Radford volleyball team closed out the Barcelona Sports Invitational with a 3-0 win over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday at Sharp Gym in Houston. The Highlanders had four players with seven or more kills.
 
SET ONE
Stephanie Neast led the way with a season-high 10 kills in the match, but Samantha Reitz tallied four of the Highlanders 14 in the first set. The Highlanders jumped out on top right from the get-go took a 13-9 lead. Bethune-Cookman scored five of the next six points and tied the set at 14. Radford closed out the set on an 11-3 run led by Reitz with three of her four kills. The large run gave Radford a 1-0 set advantage with a 25-17 win.
 
SET TWO
The second set was back-and-forth until Bethune-Cookman took an 18-14 lead. That's when Radford when on another long run and clinched the second set 25-19. The Highlanders tallied 15 kills and hit .225 led by Neast with five kills including the final point of the set.
 
SET THREE
The third set appeared to be all Radford from the start, but the Wildcats didn't go down quietly and started to climb back after the Highlanders took a 14-10 lead. BCU came back and took an 18-17 lead but just as they have in the first two sets, the Highlanders stormed back. An attack error, a service ace by Joran Coomes and a Neast kill gave Radford the lead once again, 20-18. The Highlanders scored five of the next seven points and clinched the match with a third set victory.
 
STAT OF THE MATCH
Radford tallied 45 kills in the match after starting with 14 in the first set and extending the amount by one with each set. In the third set Radford hit .324 with 16 kills, while holding the Wildcats to eight kills and a .160 hitting percentage.
 
TEAM LEADERS
Hailey Flowers was second on the team behind Neast with nine kills, while Taylor O'Neal and Mallory McKnight had eight each. The Highlanders had six service aces as O'Neal led the way with three. Grace Green led Radford with 13 digs and Coomes was one assist shy of 20.
 
UP NEXT
Radford returns home to host the Radford Invitational beginning Friday, Sept. 6 with Toledo at 6 p.m. The Highlanders will play two matches on Saturday at 11 a.m., and 5:30 p.m.
