Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

C. JONES AND FIELDS JR. COMBINE FOR 39 POINTS AS RADFORD DEFEATS CAMPBELL

RADFORD, Va.Carlik Jones and Travis Fields, Jr., combined for 39 points as the Radford men's basketball team defeated Campbell, 68-63, on Saturday inside the Dedmon Center.

Jones led all players with 22 points going 3-from-4 from 3-point range and 9-for-10 at the charity stripe. Fields Jr., added 17, shooting 55.6 percent from the field (5-for-9) and hitting two 3-pointers. Both players made clutch free throws down the stretch as Fields Jr., added a solid percentage going 5-for-6 from the line.

With the game tied at 34 just 20 seconds into the second half Devonnte Holland ignited a 7-0 run that put Radford ahead by seven points. Campbell fought and cut the seven-point lead down to two, 41-39, thanks to a Jordan Whitfield 3-pointer with 14:17 left to play. He led the Fighting Camels with 18 points.

Devin Hutchinson put Radford back up by two possessions with a layup and had a chance for an old-fashioned three-point play. Before he went to the line, a technical foul was called on the Camels' head coach. Jones went to the line and made both free throws before Hutchinson converted the and-one opportunity that extended Radford's lead, 46-39. Jones capped off an 8-0 run with a step-back 3-pointer from the right wing.

The 8-0 spurt quickly grew to a 15-2 run and Radford was in complete control with its largest lead of the game, 56-41, and 6:55 to play. Campbell, who was held to 0-for-9 shooting during the run, had other things in mind.

Campbell (10-6, 1-3 Big South) chipped away at the lead and made it a five-point game, 57-52, with two minutes remaining. The Camels never cut the lead to as low as five despite hitting a layup, a 3-pointer and a going a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the final two minutes. The reason the lead was never lower than two possessions was because of Radford's stellar free throw shooting.

Radford, who was in the double bonus for the final two minutes, ended the game making 11 free throws, shooting 11-for-14 from the line. Jones knocked down six, while Fields Jr., hit three. Holland and Donald Hicks each added one free throw make. Campbell's Jordan Whitfield hit a jump shot with six seconds left but Radford played keep-away for the final six seconds to put the game on ice.

The Highlanders (8-7, 3-0 Big South) shot the ball well in the first half (60 percent) and carried a two-point lead into the break. The first half saw three ties and 14 lead changes but Radford scored seven of the final 12 points of the half - Jones with five of them - to claim a lead.

Campbell shot 46.2 percent in the first half but the Highlander defense buckled down and held the Camels to 32.1 percent from the floor and 21.4 percent from 3-point range in the second. Campbell totaled 38.9 percent shooting for the duration of the game and Radford is now 6-0 when holding teams to under 40 percent shooting.

STAT OF THE GAME
Jones and Fields Jr., tallied 57 percent of the team's total points. The duo shot 47.6 percent from the floor together (10-for-21) and went 6-for-8 from beyond the arc.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Radford shot 45.8 percent from the floor and tallied a 37.5 3-point percentage. It's the sixth straight game the Highlanders have tallied a field goal percentage greater than 40 percent. Jones led the way with three 3-pointers and Fields Jr., added two. The Portsmouth, Va., native has scored 15 or more points in his last four outings. Holland provided a great 25 minutes with nine points and seven rebounds. Leroy Butts IV was the only other Highlander with a 3-point make. Radford outrebounded the Camels 37-28 but committed more turnovers, 13-9. The Highlanders had eight turnovers in the first half and only had five for the second. Radford still has not committed more than 14 turnovers in any game this season.

TWEET OF THE GAME

QUOTABLE
"I thought we were in control the whole game," Mike Jones stated. "We didn't close out the game the way we wanted too but we made our free throws down the stretch and we got just enough stops. We're still learning how to be a really good team and play for a full 40 minutes."

UP NEXT
Radford will take a trip to the Palmetto State for a Thursday night matchup at USC Upstate at 6 p.m., before traveling to Presbyterian on Saturday.
