Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Radford Defeats Longwood in Wild Finish to Open Big South Play

RADFORD, Va. – A chaotic finish happened inside the Dedmon Center on Monday night as the Radford men's basketball team topped Longwood, 67-66, to start Big South play 1-0 for the sixth consecutive season.

Controlling the lead for most of the game, Radford (2-4, 1-0 Big South) fell behind by two after Leslie Nkereuwem converted two free throws and gave the Lancers a 66-64 lead with 1:21 remaining in regulation. It was Longwood's first lead since the 14:57 mark in the first half.

With less than 30 seconds left, Fah'Mir Ali hit the second end of a pair of free throws and cut the deficit to one. After some miscommunication on the inbounds pass, Christian Wilson threw the ball to an open space on the court and Josiah Jeffers picked up the unclaimed ball.

After a miss by the Highlanders in that possession, Lewis Djonkam scooped up the rebound and was fouled by Wilson on the shot with 16 second left. He knocked down both free throws but Longwood had one final opportunity.

Juan Munoz found Bennett Mohn in the corner for a good 3-point look. Out of nowhere, Jeffers made another great defensive play with a block. Wilson got the offensive rebound but then traveled with less than a second left. Quinton Morton-Robertson received the out-of-bounds pass as the clock expired and Radford won its second straight game.

Radford had the lead for just under 35 minutes in the contest but the Lancers erased a double-digit second half deficit with some stellar shooting. The Lancers improved their field goal shooting by almost 11 percent (50 percent) and shot 53.3 percent (8-for-15) from long range.

The Highlanders shot 50 percent in the first half and carried an eight-point lead into halftime. Dravon Mangum and Ali made their presence known in the first half with 18 of Radford's 35 points. Mangum knocked down three 3-pointers and tallied a career-high 14 points on the night. Ali had seven of his 12 in the first half.

Chyree Walker had his first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. He also tallied his second straight double-digit rebound game.

Stat of the Game
Despite Radford's 13 turnovers, it's the first victory the team has had this season with committing double-digit turnovers. The Highlanders and Lancers tied with 13 turnovers each.

Tweet of the Game

Quotable
"The league has started early and I didn't know if we were quite ready to start it," Mike Jones said. "I thought both teams played one heck of a college basketball game. They were ready and played extremely well but I thought our guys made just enough plays. I thought our defense was good enough. We'll improve on that side of the ball but it was good to see some shots fall for some guys that had a slow start to the season. Overall I'm pleased."
