RADFORD EDGES CAMPBELL BEHIND SECOND HALF SURGE

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Radford men's basketball team outscored Campbell by 15 in the second half to edge the Camels, 73-60, on Saturday at Gore Arena in Buies Creek, N.C.

Devonnte Holland picked up a season-high 19 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double against the Camels. He was efficient from the floor converting 9-of-12 from the field – both career-highs – and made his lone free throw attempt. He only needed 20 minutes to top his previous career-high of 16 as 17 of his 19 points came in the second half.

Down by two at the half, Holland hit a jumper from 17 feet on the Highlanders' (17-9, 12-2 Big South) first possession of the second half. That's when the Holland show began as he tallied Radford's first nine points of the half, while Campbell only had three. The 9-3 run gave the Highlanders a 39-35 advantage.

Campbell (13-14, 4-11 Big South) hung around and eventually closed the gap to two points with 13:50 to play. Then Carlik Jones and the Highlander defense made their presence known with a 15-6 run that created an 11-point lead. Jones led the charge with seven points, while the defense forced five turnovers and held the Camels to just 2-of-5 shooting over the six-minute span. Jones finished with 18 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Cedric Henderson made a 3-pointer to end the run and cut it back to eight points but Devin Hutchinson erased it with a 3-ball of his own on the next possession. The Charlotte, N.C., native's shot pushed the lead back to 11 points.

Radford's persistent effort eventually pressed the lead to as many as 13 points with 3:13 remaining. The Camels cut it to nine with 1:18 left in the game but Holland's 19th point – which led all players – and Travis Fields, Jr.'s, pair of free throws were the final points of the game.

The Highlanders had a sluggish start in Gore Arena and found themselves down 10 points with 8:28 to play in the first half. Radford scored 10 of the next 12 points as a collective group and cut the Camel lead to two with 3:13 to play.

After a 3-point basket by LaDarius Knight, Radford scored the next six points and took a 30-29 lead thanks to a Devine Eke free throw inside the final minute of the half. Campbell reclaimed the lead before the break as Cory Gensler hit a 3-pointer with 34 seconds remaining.

The Camels shot 44.0 percent from the floor for the entirety of the game but committed 13 turnovers, while Radford shot 59.4 percent in the second half and finished the game with a 47.6 field goal percentage. The Highlanders took advantage of the Camel mishaps and scored 19 points off turnovers.

STAT OF THE GAME
Radford overcame a double-digit deficit for the second time this year. The first came against USC Upstate on Jan. 16, which was also a 10-point shortage.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Radford had 40 rebounds, while the Camels had 26. Radford had as many defensive rebounds as Campbell had in total rebounds. Of the 73 points scored by Radford 46 of them came inside the paint. Eke was one point and three rebounds shy of his second consecutive double-double. Fields Jr., led the Highlanders with six assists and added eight points. Campbell had a trio of players in double-figure scoring led by Henderson's 17 points.

TWEET OF THE GAME

QUOTABLE
"I thought on both sides of the ball we were pretty good in the second half," Mike Jones opened. "43 points is a big number and I'm very proud of that. Most of them were layups. We had 30 points in the paint in the second half alone. Defensively, to hold them to 28 is really good because you know down at that end, they draw up some stuff and have some guys that can make some shots. It was a collective effort on both ends."

UP NEXT
Radford will have back-to-back home games that begins with an ESPNU matchup against UNC Asheville at 9 p.m., on Thursday night.
