STRONG BULLPEN NOT ENOUGH FOR RADFORD IN MIDWEEK LOSS
2/19/2020 8:42:00 PM | Baseball
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Radford's bullpen threw 6 1/3 shutout innings on Tuesday evening, but Liberty jumped out to an early lead and held off the Highlanders, 4-2, at Liberty Baseball Stadium.
Â
The Highlanders (3-1) cut what was a 4-0 deficit to two runs and had the tying run at the plate in the seventh, but the Flames (1-3) managed to allow just one run in the inning and threw scoreless eighth and ninth innings to seal the game.
Â
Andrew Boyd, Derek Domecq and Brandon Feathers combined to allow just three hits across their respective relief outings, but the Flames struck for one run in the first in three in the second against starter Hunter Williams. Boyd, in his first collegiate appearances, went four innings and allowed just a pair of singles and a walk, while striking out a pair as the first pitcher out of the bullpen.
Â
Liberty starter Mason Hand went five innings and didn't allow a hit until the fifth, when Tanner Barrs hit a single to left field. Barrs, making his first career collegiate start, collected his first two career hits in the game.
Â
The Highlanders got to Liberty's bullpen in the sixth and seventh, pushing across a run in each inning. Garrett Matheny was hit by a pitch to start the sixth inning and, after two wild pitches advanced him to third, scored on a Will Harless groundout.
Â
Anthony Galati and Barrs reached base in the seventh via a walk and a single, respectively, and Radford had runners at the corners with one out in the inning. A Sean Cheely fielder's choice scored Galati but with the tying run at the plate, the Flames forced an inning-ending groundout. From there, Liberty was able to see out the win, handing the Highlanders their first loss of the season.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Catcher Straton Podaras threw out another attempted base-stealer in the sixth inning. Opposing baserunners are 0-for-5 on stolen base attempts against Podaras this season.
