 BASEBALL

  • Radford closes its season-opening 11-game road trip with a three-game weekend series at Georgia Southern beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.
  • The Highlanders are seeking to return to the win column after dropping a close 3-2 game on the road to Virginia Tech. The Highlanders led in the contest through six innings, 1-0.
  • Each of Radford's first six hitters in the order had a hit against the Hokies, including Garrett Matheny, who recorded the Highlanders' first triple in the eighth inning.
  • Anthony Galati is currently riding a four-game hit streak and has reached base safely in all eight games this year, the only Highlander to do so.
  • Tanner Barrs has reached base in all four games where he has recorded more than one at-bat. Barrs has a .308 average in five games, and has started at both first base and left field.
  • Starting pitcher Brandon Donovan has recorded the two longest outings of his career in his first two starts this season. Donovan went 6 2/3 innings against N.C. Central, where he had a career-high 11 strikeouts, and threw seven innings against Mercer.
  • The Highlanders have three different relief pitchers who have recorded an ERA under 2.00, including Brandon Feathers' 1.04 ERA in three appearances (8 2/3 IP) and Austin Gerber's 1.69 ERA in four appearances (5 1/3 IP).
  • Georgia Southern enters the weekend with a 3-4 record. The Eagles are currently on a four-game losing streak, though all four losses came against ranked competition (vs. Georgia Tech once, at East Carolina three times).
  • The Eagles swept their season-opening series against Ball State, including a game in which they scored a whopping 15 runs in the first inning.
  • Jason Swan is the Eagles' top hitter thus far among the regular starters with a .273 average. Swan has a double, five RBIs and a team-leading four stolen bases.
  • Starting pitcher Jordan Jackson has 13 strikeouts in 10 innings pitched and has limited opposing hitters to a .206 batting average.

  • Radford (6-3) will travel to Fairfax, Va., to compete in the Patriot Classic hosted by George Mason.
  • The tournament features five games – two against Delaware and Lafayette and one against George Mason.
  • Talia Douglas went 8-for-14 with seven runs scored, three doubles and a home run in five games last week, while Hunter Mundy had three home runs.
  • The senior tallied the third multi-home run game of her career hitting two in the 4-0 win over Youngstown State.
  • Douglas leads the team with a .600 batting average, which currently ranks fourth in all of NCAA Softball.
  • Sydney Fisher ranks 16th in the nation in doubles per game with 0.56. She's got five doubles so far this season.
  • Jessie Marvin (3-1) leads the team with 22 strikeouts and a 1.40 ERA. Two of her four outings have been shutouts.
  • Delaware (12-2) has acquired wins over UConn, Boston College and Georgetown. Its only losses came to Sacramento State and Florida Gulf Coast, which came on the first weekend.
  • Brooke Glanden leads the team with a .432 batting average and 22 RBIs. She's also tallied 19 hits and three home runs.
  • The Blue Hens have a pair of pitchers with 4-0 records in Maddi Marsh and Sarah Piening. Marsh has a 1.70 ERA, while Piening has a 2.83 ERA. The duo has only combined for 20 of the teams 54 strikeouts.
  • Lafayette will open its season this weekend at the Patriot Classic. 12 of 16 Leopards are in the freshman or sophomore classes.
  • George Mason (1-9) only has one win and it came against Houston Baptist last weekend.
  • Taylor Dadig is hitting .391 with nine hits, none of the extra base variety. The team only has two home runs. All of the Patriots pitchers have over a 4.00 ERA but Marina Vitalich has 25 of the team's 41 strikeouts.

  • Radford tallied a mini rally late against Elon back on Tuesday, Feb. 25th, finishing the contest with six goals against the Phoenix.
  • Nationally, goalkeeper Maddie Bowman is ranked at 36th in save percentage, fourth in saves, and eighth in saves per game. 
  • She is joined by Rachel Rogers who is 90th in caused turnovers per game, Katie Bendrick at 128th in draw controls per game, and Brittany Rinaldi at 67th in ground balls per game. 
  • Freshman Madi McKee tallied another goal against the Bison, bringing her season tally to six. She's third on the team in draw controls with seven behind Johnston (16) and Ruskey (11).
  • Junior Priya Kavuru has been impressive on defense, registering eight ground balls and seven caused turnovers.
  • Speaking of defense, the Explorers have kept fouls to a minimum, registering 11.67 per game—15th best in the nation.
 
 MEN'S TENNIS


at Davidson - Friday, Feb. 28 | 3 p.m.

Series: Radford leads 3-2
  • The Highlanders take on Davidson for the sixth time in a tight series where Radford last came out victorious last year in a 4-3 win.
  • Last year the doubles squad of Rodrigo Magalhaes and Yevhen Sirous clinched the doubles point against Davidson with Andres Silva providing a big singles win on court six.
  • After being named Big South Freshman of the Week, Demi Taramonlis is looking to keep up his hot streak of three straight singles victories and four straight doubles victories.
  • The duo of Silva and Taramonlis have been practically unstoppable this season, posting a 10-1 overall record in doubles play with an unbeaten record through match play.
 
 WOMEN'S TENNIS


at Gardner-Webb - Wednesday, Feb. 29 | 2 p.m.
Where: Boiling Springs, N.C.
Records: Radford (3-2, 1-1) | Hampton (3-3, 1-0)
Series: Radford leads 10-3
  • The women's tennis program split their doubleheader against Campbell and North Carolina A&T last Saturday with the win coming against North Carolina A&T.
  • Anastasia Belyaeva won both her matches on court one for the Highlanders with an intense win against Campbell 7-6, 5-7, 10-8.
  • Freshman Camryn McClure picked up her first singles win in her first appearance as a Highlander on court six 6-4, 6-0 against North Carolina A&T.
  • This is the second Big South match of the season after a tough battle with Campbell last weekend. 
 
 WOMEN'S GOLF


at Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic - Sunday, March 1 - Tuesday, March 3

  • The Highlanders return to the course on Sunday when they begin play at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic.
  • Radford is coming off a third-place finish at the Oyster Shuck Match Play in its first event of the spring season. The Highlanders defeated The Citadel, 4-1, and USC Beaufort, 3-2, and lost to eventual tournament winner Morehead State, 3-2.
  • Jayde Dudley and Sidney Walker were each named to the all-tournament team after compiling perfect 3-0 records at the Oyster Shuck Match Play. Dudley had the two largest margins of victory in the tournament, winning her match in the quarterfinals and in the third-place match by identical 8 & 6 scores.
  • The Highlanders are one of nine Big South teams in the field, joining Charleston Southern, Hampton, High Point, Longwood, Presbyterian, UNC Asheville, USC Upstate and Winthrop.
  • This is the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country, with 53 teams competing in this season's edition. The top 26 teams after 36 holes will compete for a flight title, while teams 27-53 will compete for another flight title.
