RADFORD SURVIVES HAMPTON’S LATE RUN, CLAIMS SHARE OF BIG SOUTH TITLE

HAMPTON, Va. – The Radford men's basketball team survived a late run from Hampton and came out of the Hampton Convocation Center with an 81-78 victory on Thursday night, clinching a share of the 2019-20 Big South Regular Season Championship.

With the win, the 2019-20 senior class earned its 79th victory making them the winningest four-year class in program history. The class combined for 56 of the team's 81 points against Hampton and four of the five were in double-digit scoring. The class also led the way for the Highlanders to earn their third consecutive 20-win season. Radford has never had 20-plus wins in three consecutive years until now.

Radford (20-9, 15-2 Big South) had a 70-59 lead with just over eight minutes left in the second half but Hampton (13-17, 8-9 Big South) went on a 21-9 run to cut the deficit to one, 79-78, with 52 seconds.

After an empty possession by the Highlanders, the Pirates had a chance to take the lead but the league's leading scorer in Jermaine Marrow missed a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left. Radford came down with the rebound and Hampton had to foul three more times until the Highlanders were in the bonus. The third foul was committed against Carlik Jones and he was sent to the foul line with seven seconds remaining for a one-and-one.

The redshirt junior knocked down two huge free throws to make it a three-point game. The Pirates still had a chance to send the game into overtime. Marrow dribbled down the floor and fired a shot from beyond the arc. His shot bounced off the rim harmlessly and the Highlanders escaped Hampton with a share of the conference title.

Donald Hicks and Travis Fields, Jr., connected on a pair of 3-pointers early in the game that separated the Highlanders from the Pirates, 12-6. Jones added to the 6-0 run with a layup making it an eight point game with 14:35 to play in the first half.

Hampton inched closer but every time the Pirates hit a shot to close the gap, Radford answered back. The Highlanders eventually pulled away with a 7-1 run over the final 2:30 of the first half and carried a nine-point advantage into the locker room at 38-29.

After Hampton hit the first bucket out of the break, the Highlanders scored the next eight points – led by Jones' five points – and took its largest lead of the game at 16 points. The Highlanders maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half until Hampton got hot and made it close in the final eight minutes.

Jones tallied his 16th 20-plus point game this season, leading Radford with 20 points. The Highlanders had five players in double-figure scoring for the first time since facing James Madison earlier this season on Dec. 4th.
