RADFORD SWEEPS WESTERN CAROLINA IN MIDWEEK TILT

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – It was two different games and two different stories on Wednesday as the Radford softball team withstood a comeback and pulled off a comeback for a pair of victories over Western Carolina.

The first game saw Radford (13-3) withstand a late surge by Western Carolina (3-13) in a 7-6 win and the second saw the Highlanders score three runs in the final two innings to earn a 4-3 victory.

GAME ONE
The Highlanders got off on a hot start scoring five in a row. The first inning saw Destiny Freeman plaster a bases loaded double over the right fielder's head to plate Sydney Fisher and Riley Oakes. On the next at-bat, Sofia Tapia drove in Hunter Mundy with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The 3-0 lead grew to 4-0 when Autumn Slemaker homered to straightaway center field in the second inning. It was the freshman's first collegiate home run. After that, Riley Oakes reached on a fielding error, allowing a run to score in the fourth.

Both teams traded a pair of long balls and Radford had a 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. Then Western Carolina scored two runs in the fifth to cut the lead in half, 6-3. Ashlyn Long hit an RBI single to make it a two-run game.

Madison Canady neutralized that run with an infield single that plated Freeman in the seventh. Then Hannah Morris relieved Jessie Marvin to close it out in the seventh. The sophomore was only able to get one out before Marvin re-entered with the score 7-6 and the game-tying run at first.

Marvin gave up a single and the Catamounts traded a run to put their two base runners in scoring position. The junior pitcher was able to get a groundout to Slemaker at shortstop for the final out of the game.

Canady went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Freeman added a pair of RBIs of her own. Slemaker had a 2-for-3 game with  a walk and her first collegiate home run. Western Carolina had five different players with multi-hit games.

GAME TWO
Radford fell in an 2-0 hole with solo home runs by Western Carolina in the first and second innings.

Oakes, who earned the start in the circle for game two, helped herself out with an RBI single to shortstop. That cut the lead to one. WCU's Long had her second RBI of the day with a single through the left side plating Lindsay Perillo in the fifth inning.

Down 3-1, the Highlanders only had three outs to work with. Mundy delivered a two-out single to left field then Freeman tallied her fourth RBI of the day with a two-run blast to tie things up at three before the end of the inning.

Marvin (8-1) already recorded 0.2 innings of no-hit softball, did exactly the same thing in the sixth giving Radford a chance to win the game.

It didn't take long for Madison Canady to give Radford its first lead of game two. She led off the seventh inning with a solo shot putting Radford ahead, 4-3. Then Marvin closed out the game with a pair of ground outs and a foul out to Tapia behind the plate.

Marvin earned her eighth win of the season and only faced eight batters in 2.2 innings, while Oakes pitched 4.1 innings and struck out three with no walks allowed. Mundy had the game's only multi-hit performance going 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Freeman had the lone multi-RBI performance. Fisher extended her hitting streak to 12 games.
