SEVEN-RUN SEVENTH PROPELS HIGHLANDERS TO SERIES SWEEP OF CANISIUS

RADFORD, Va. – Locked in a 2-2 tie, Radford plated for seven runs in the seventh inning on Sunday afternoon on its way to a 12-2 win over visiting Canisius at Williams Field at Carter Memorial Stadium.

The win was the Highlanders' fourth straight and pushes their record back above .500 at 8-7. Canisius dropped to 3-11-1 with the loss.

The visitors put the first run on the board in the top of the first inning, but the Highlanders responded with a Colby Higgerson RBI single to even the score through an inning.

Both starting pitchers, Canisius' Will Frank and Radford's Ryan Bywaters, cruised through the next three innings before the Highlanders took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Garrett Matheny scored on a ground ball hit by Sean Cheely that went past the second baseman for an error.

The Golden Griffins tied the game on a single plus an error in the seventh inning, but the tie was short-lived, as Radford's bats came to life in the bottom half of the inning.

Cheely took advantage of the infield playing in, giving Radford the lead with an RBI single through the left side. After Straton Podaras walked to load the bases, J.D. Mundy crushed a no-doubt grand slam to right field to break the game open. A fielder's choice and a groundout added a pair of runs in the inning, and the Highlanders had a 9-2 lead after the seventh.

Radford added three more in the eighth, Higgerson hit an RBI double down the right-field line to score Podaras and Harless hit an RBI single that scored Carlin Christian and Higgerson, aided by an error.

Brandon Feathers and Bruce Hudson shut the door with hitless eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to clinch the Highlanders' second series sweep of the season. Bywaters threw a career-high 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) with four strikeouts. Derek Domecq earned the win for Radford after recording the final out of the seventh.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Mundy's seventh-inning grand slam was the third of his career. Colby Higgerson finished the series 10-for-13 (.769) with eight runs and five RBIs. The 34 runs scored for Radford in the series marked the most in a three-game series this season. The Highlanders swept their second non-conference series of the season, a feat last accomplished during Radford's 2015 championship season.
