Hot First Half Shooting Pushes Radford Past Hampton, 79-66

RADFORD, Va. – Hot first half shooting and winning the battle on the boards pushed the Radford men's basketball team past Hampton, 79-66, on Monday night inside the Dedmon Center.

The Highlanders tallied seven 3-pointers in the first half against the Pirates and shot 53.8 percent from beyond the arc (7-for-13). It was the most first half 3-pointers by Radford all season long and was one shy of tying a season-high.

It was a back-and-forth affair for most of the first half until Lewis Djonkam gave Radford a 25-24 lead with 7:30 remaining in the period. That sparked a 23-7 run over the next 6:16 and put Radford ahead 46-31 right before the half. During the run Radford knocked down five of their seven first half long balls. Four different players made a trifecta during the run, including Keishon Porter's first collegiate 3-pointer.

In the second half, Radford eventually set a season-best in 3-point makes with nine for the entirety of the game. However, the 3-point percentage declined a bit and Hampton crawled their way back into the game.

The Pirates eventually cut the Highlander lead to four in the second half with 13:11 to play. However, Radford's defense tightened up and held Hampton scoreless over the next 5:23, and pushed the lead back up to 12 points, 64-52, with 7:54 remaining.

Radford kept its foot on the gas pedal and ultimately took a 16-point lead with just under three minutes on the clock. Hampton cut into the lead, but it never got lower than double-digits. That led to the largest margin of victory by either team in the all-time series. The highest margin of victory was in 2012, when the Highlanders won by nine, 73-62.

Dravon Mangum earned his first career double-double and set a career-high in points with 17 after previously setting a career-high of 16 last time out. He also notched his first double-digit rebound game as a Highlander with 10. He had 10 of his 17 points in the first half and led the team with a trio of 3-pointers.

Fah'Mir Ali tallied a career-high 16 points, while Lewis Djonkam tied a career-high with 16 as well. Bryan Hart knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and tallied eight points, which is his most in a Highlander uniform.

Stat of the Game
Radford corralled 45 rebounds, which was the most it tallied in a game all season long. The Highlanders won the battle on the boards by 18 (45-27), the most against a Division I opponent this season and just one short of tying the largest margin against any opponent this year (19 against Mars Hill).

Fun Fact
It was the 10th ESPNU Wildcard game for the Highlanders. With the win, Radford is now 8-2 all-time in ESPNU Wildcard games.

Tweet of the Game

Quotable
"It's fun to see some shots go down, which makes my job a lot easier," Mike Jones said. "But, as usual, this year I was really pleased with our overall defensive effort. I thought we were a little bit better in the second half than we were in the first, outside of that initial four minutes or so. I thought we clamped down defensively and got ourselves a really good win against a really good team.
