CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – It was a tale of two halves as the Radford men's basketball team fell, 73-52, to the 25
th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers inside John Paul Jones Arena on Friday night. Radford and UVA both move to 1-1 on the season.
The Highlanders got into foul trouble early, specifically amongst their big men, and struggled to find a consistent presence inside all night long. That led to a 29-to-7 difference in free throw attempts, giving the hosts a massive advantage on a night where neither team shot particularly well from the field.
Bryan Hart led Radford with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including a pair of threes.
Shaquan Jules added 10 points with a perfect 3-for-3 mark from the floor and 4-for-4 effort at the free throw line.
Josiah Jeffers earned his second start in as many games and he got the Highlanders off to the races on their first possession. The senior knocked down a step-back jumper and drew a foul to give Radford a dose of confidence early on.
Jeffers followed it up with a three and Hart added one of his own to put the Highlanders ahead, 8-3 just two-and-a-half minutes into the game. It was then that the Cavaliers took over, going on a 20-2 run over the next eight minutes that gave them control.
Jules threw down a monster dunk right before halftime, but Virginia took a 41-21 lead into the break.
The second half was much better for the Highlanders, who were only out-scored 32-31 over the final 20 minutes. Radford was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in that time and found ways to get a rotation of six bench players involved in the action.
UVA guard Armaan Franklin (21 points, 5 threes) and forward Jayden Gardner (18 points, 7 rebounds) were the primary threats on the offensive end. Forward Kadin Shedrick did all of his damage, 10 points on 10-of-10 shooting, from the free throw line.
