RADFORD, Va. – The 2021 Radford Men's Soccer season came to a close with a 2-1 loss to Longwood at Cupp Stadium on Thursday night.
The Highlanders needed either a win or a tie to make the Big South Tournament, but following last night's results across the conference, tonight's defeat officially eliminates them from postseason contention.
Radford got off to a strong start, taking a 1-0 lead in the 25
th minute thanks to an
Octavio Ocampo penalty kick. The senior defender collected himself before stepping forward and burying a right-footed shot into the bottom, right corner of the net.
Despite some late pressure from the Lancers, Radford protected its lead and went into halftime up 1-0. It was in the 51
st minute when things changed.
Longwood was awarded a penalty kick tied the game at 1-all. Then, just 1 minute and 11 seconds later, the Lancers added a second goal to take the lead.
Radford saw a glimmer of hope when a Longwood player received a red card in the 80
th minute and gave the Highlanders a chance to play a man-up for the final 10 minutes.
The visitors managed to hold on until the final whistle.
