Softball Opening Day Spoiled by Georgia State

ATLANTA, Ga. – The long-anticipated wait for the 2021 softball season is over, but it didn't go in favor of the Radford softball team on Friday night as the team was swept by Georgia State at Bob Heck Softball Complex.

Game 1
Sophomore Abby Wilson notched her first career home run in the fifth inning, but that was all the offense Radford could manage in the 3-1 loss in game one.

Georgia State scored all of its runs in the third inning thanks to an RBI single from Emily Brown and a single a batter later, that plated two by Bailee Richardson.

The Highlanders made a late push with Wilson's solo shot in the fifth and had a pair of base runners in the sixth, as well as having the bases loaded in the seventh. Unfortunately, Radford was unable to push any of them across the plate as the team was only 1-for-9 (.111) with runners in scoring position.

In her season debut, Jessie Marvin tossed a complete game but allowed three earned runs on 11 hits. She struck out one of the 30 batters she faced.

Sydney Fisher pushed her hitting streak to 13 games with a pair of hits – both singles. She was the only Highlander with a multi-hit game.

Game 2
The Highlanders fell in game two after only getting one hit on the offensive side in a 6-0 loss. Hannah Morris was the only Highlander to get a hit. She also tossed three innings of relief pitching and one strikeout. The junior only allowed four hits and issued no walks.

Her lone hit came in the fifth inning but it came with two outs and the Highlanders weren't able to do anything in the inning. Radford only had four base runners all game. The team's best chance to score came in the sixth inning when Sydney Fisher reached on walk and made it to third on a fly out.

The next frame Georgia State added to its 5-0 lead with an RBI single by Emily Brown. She was one of three Panthers with a multi-hit game and tallied two RBIs. Bailee Richardson chipped in three RBIs with a pair of hits, including a home run. Brown and Richardson earned three of their RBIs in the third inning with a Brown double and the long ball by Richardson.

GSU's Emily Buck tossed seven innings of shutout ball with six strikeouts. Skyler DeHart earned the nod for the Highlanders and allowed four runs in three innings of work.
