Radford Drops Two at Georgia Tech

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Radford softball team fell to Georgia Tech in a Saturday doubleheader at Mewborn Field in Atlanta. The Highlanders fell to the Yellow Jackets, 11-0, in the first game and, 10-0, in the second.

Game 1
The first game saw the Highlanders pick up two hits – one from Sydney Fisher and the other from Talia Douglas. Douglas' hit came in the second at-bat of the game but a fly out and strikeout ended the inning two at-bats later.

Fisher's team-leading third hit of the season came in the top of the third inning but there were already two outs in the inning and a pop out to the pitcher ended the frame. Radford drew a pair of walks in the fourth inning with nobody out but Georgia Tech's pitcher did all the work with a pair of strikeouts and a 1-3 putout to end the threat. Radford went 0-for-6 with runners on base.

The Highlanders held the team scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, but the damage was already done with three runs in the first inning, four in the second and third innings, respectively.

Georgia Tech bested the Highlanders in the circle as Blake Neleman (2-0) pitched a two-hit complete game. She struck out nine batters and walked two through 5.0 innings of work.

On the other end, Jessie Marvin (0-2) suffered her second loss of the season. Hannah Morris only allowed one hit in 1.2 innings of relief work. She had one of two strikeouts for the Highlanders.

Game 2
The Highlanders were staring in the face of a no-hitter until the fifth inning of a 10-0 contest when Taylor Breidt singled through the right side. Not only did the one-out hit end the no-hit bid, but it was also Breidt's first collegiate hit.

Sarah Smith (0-1) earned the start for Radford. She walked four and struck out one in her season debut, but allowed 10 runs on eight hits. Hannah Morris entered in relief for the second time in as many games and only allowed two hits through 1.2 innings of work.

Georgia Tech did all of its damage in the first three innings, highlighted by a seven run second inning. The inning saw two long balls with one being a grand slam by Kennedy Cowden.

Lexi Ray (1-0) pitched a one-hit bid but only struck out three batters with one walk. She faced 17 batters and was able to get seven groundouts.
