Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Hoops Falls to Gardner-Webb on Senior Night

RADFORD, Va. – It was Senior Night inside the Dedmon Center, but the Radford men's basketball team fell to Gardner-Webb, 69-57, on Wednesday night.

A pair of future graduates were honored prior to the game on Wednesday in Jordan Hemphill and Bryan Hart. Both players saw action in the game and Hemphill notched five points, including a big 3-pointer late in the second half in the middle of a 10-2 Radford run that cut the deficit to eight points.

That was as close as the Highlanders (13-10, 12-5 Big South) came to cutting into the GWU lead. It was an eight-point game, 65-57, with 3:41 to play after Dante Moses hit a pair of free throws. On the next possession, Gardner-Webb took nearly a minute off the clock with three offensive rebounds that ended with a Jaheam Cornwall jumper. That pushed the GWU lead back to double-digits with 2:42 to play that the Highlanders couldn't overcome.

Radford took an 8-6 lead early in the game but Gardner-Webb went on a 14-2 run and had a 10-point edge midway through the first half. The Highlanders cut it to five with 9:09 on the clock before halftime, but the Runnin' Bulldogs pushed the lead to 17-points 42-25 with less than a minute to play in the first half.

The Highlanders shot 45.0 percent in the first half but were bested by Gardner-Webb's 63.8 percent. GWU went 7-for-11 (63.6 percent) from beyond the arc. Radford held the Runnin' Bulldogs to 46.2 percent shooting in the second half – 22.2 percent form 3-point range – and even outscored them 30-27, but the lead was too much to overcome despite the Highlanders chipping away.

Stat of the Game
Normally Radford leads in points in the paint, but this time it was GWU that outscored the Highlanders in the paint, 30-20.

Inside the Box Score
Fah'Mir Ali and Xavier Lipscomb combined for 21 points. Ali led with 11 and Lipscomb notched 10. Shaquan Jules chipped in nine points. Gardner-Webb's Cornwall led all players with 20 points, while Jacob Falko notched 18. He hit 4-of-5 3-pointers.

Tweet of the Game

Quotable
"Our defensive effort allowed them to get a lot of easy shots early in the game," Mike Jones said. "That gave them a lot of confidence and then it was hard to stop them. Cornwall had a big-time game but all the guys got pretty clean looks. When you do that against a good offensive team, they'll make you pay. I think that set the tone early on and that's how we ended up getting in a big hole. Our defensive intensity wasn't there, we didn't play hard enough and they capitalized on that."
