Late-Inning Offensive Outburst Carries Virginia Tech Past Radford

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech scored 18 runs in the final three innings Tuesday afternoon to break open what was a close game and defeat Radford, 22-2, at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.

The Highlanders had cut the Hokie lead to 4-2 prior to the offensive outburst, which saw Radford use four different pitchers across the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Radford took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Connor Bagnieski RBI groundout that scored Garrett Matheny, who led off the game with a single. Virginia Tech quickly tied it up in the bottom half of the inning on a double-play that scored Jack Hurley from third.

Virginia Tech took the lead in the third on a sacrifice fly, then extended it by scoring on a wild pitch. TJ Rumfield made it a 4-1 game with a solo homer over the scoreboard in right.

The Highlanders got a run back in the fourth when Anthony Galati tripled to left center and Jalen Buster ripped an RBI single back up the middle to score him, but the chance at a big inning was dashed when David Bryant was called for interference on a stolen base attempt, which ruled Buster out on the play.

After Ty Burton threw two 1-2-3 innings in his Radford debut, the Hokie bats exploded for three in the sixth, nine in the seventh and six in the eighth off the Highlander bullpen. Radford had just one hit in the final four innings, as four Virginia Tech pitchers combined to throw five consecutive scoreless innings to close out the game.

STAT OF THE GAME
Tuesday's game saw five different Highlanders make their team debuts – pitchers Tyler Bowes, Ty Burton and Landon Higgerson, outfield Bryson Dansberry and infielder Tommy Myint all made their first appearance in a Radford uniform.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Bryant's on-base streak ends at 11 games. Galati's triple marks the third straight game in which he had a hit. The bottom half of Radford's lineup combined for five of the team's eight hits. Sean Cheely reached base three times in four plate appearances (two hits and a walk).

Radford is currently scheduled to play Bucknell at home for a weekend series beginning Friday; however, those games are currently in jeopardy due to COVID-19 issues on the Bucknell University campus. An announcement will be made on games this weekend in the coming days.
