Softball Takes Down Norfolk State in Doubleheader Sweep

NORFOLK, Va. – The Radford softball team earned its first two wins of the 2021 season as it bested Norfolk State, 4-0, and, 5-3, in less than 24 hours' notice on Friday afternoon.

Game 1 • Radford 4, Norfolk State 0
The Highlanders had solid pitching by Jessie Marvin and took advantage of some Norfolk State mistakes on the way to a 4-0 victory in game one of the doubleheader.

Abby Wilson pushed across the first run as Sydney Fisher scored from third on a groundout in the fourth inning. It was one of Wilson's two RBIs on the day. Her other RBI came in the top of the seventh.

Madison Canady gave Radford a 2-0 lead when she doubled in a run in the top of the sixth. Douglas was hit by a pitch and Wilson was walked to plate the final two runs of the game in the seventh inning.

Jessie Marvin pitched a gem for the second straight outing and tossed her first shutout of the season. She only allowed two hits and walked one batter. She struck out a season-high five and was able to get 10 groundouts.

The four through seven batters in the lineup stepped up for Radford as they each earned a hit. Wilson was the only Highlander with an extra base hit as she notched a double in the second inning.

Game 2 • Radford 5, Norfolk State 3
It was a lot of the same in game two as the Highlanders downed Norfolk State, 5-2. The one difference was the Highlanders had seven hits and saw a great outing in the circle from Sarah Smith.

Smith had a career day on the rubber. She tossed a career-high 7.0 innings, struck out a career-best four and allowed just three runs – two earned – on four hits. The senior also only issued two walks on 90 pitches.

Offensively, Riley Oakes had her best day of 2021 at the dish with a 3-for-4 performance and two runs scored. She even notched an RBI and a double. Sydney Fisher also tallied a multi-hit game and scored a run.

As the top two spots of the lineup, Fisher and Oakes combined for five of Radford's seven hits and scored three of the five runs. It all started in the first inning when Oakes gave Radford a 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI double that plated Fisher. She later came around to score on a passed ball.

The Highlanders later scored two runs in the fifth inning as the Spartans committed a pair of errors thanks to a dropped fly ball and throwing error by their right fielder. That gave Radford a 4-1 edge after the Spartans cut the lead in half in the fourth inning with an unearned run.

Radford tacked on a run in the sixth for insurance and Norfolk State plated a run each in the sixth and seventh innings but Smith was able to end the game with the game-tying run at the plate.
