Cheely’s Career Day Leads Radford to Series Sweep

RADFORD, Va. – Sean Cheely finished a single shy of the cycle Sunday afternoon as the Highlanders downed Villanova, 6-1, at Williams Field at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium.

Cheely tripled to lead off the third, doubled to lead off the fifth and hit a two-run homer in the sixth for his three hits on the day. Straton Podaras also went deep for the Highlanders, while four Radford pitchers combined to allow one run on four hits.

Radford took the lead in the bottom of the first when Connor Bagnieski tripled into the gap in right center to score Dac Archer. It marked the fifth straight game in which Radford scored in the opening frame.

Villanova tied the game in the third on a wild pitch, but Cheely's triple followed by an Archer RBI groundout gave the Highlanders the lead once again, something they wouldn't relinquish.

Once Villanova went to the bullpen in the fifth, Radford quickly added to its advantage. Cheely's leadoff double was followed by a Podaras two-run homer to left center, extending Radford's lead to 4-1. It was the first homer the Highlanders had hit all season.

Radford added to its lead in the sixth when Jalen Buster singled to left and Cheely homered to left center, making it a 6-1 game.

Villanova threatened in the seventh with a pair of two-out baserunners but Austin Kaplan ended the scoring chance with a strikeout. The Wildcats had a runner on second in both the eighth and ninth as well, but the Highlander bullpen kept the visitors off the board to close out the win.

Vinnie Venturi got the start for the Highlanders and went four innings, allowing a run on two hits with four strikeouts. Kaplan, Derek Domecq and Alex Perkins combined to allow just two hits in the final five innings, with Kaplan picking up the win.

STAT OF THE GAME
Cheely's two-run homer in the sixth was his first in a Highlander uniform.
