Radford Falls in Big South Opener

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Radford (0-7, 0-1 BSC) lost a tough match at Campbell (1-3, 1-0 BSC) Saturday afternoon despite Ava Goeller's second straight weekend with a multi-goal game.

Goeller's first goal of the game came at the 21:40 mark of the first half which halted a 3-0 run by Campbell to open the game. Just four minutes later she ripped off her second goal of the half to make it just a 4-2 Campbell lead. From there it was all Campbell as they went on a 6-0 run to close out the half and take a 10-2 lead.

Maddie Bowman had a strong day in the net, and it started in the first half with eight saves against the constant attack by Campbell. Bowman faced 18 shots on goal in the first half alone, 23 shots total, and kept the score low enough for Radford to potentially get back into the game.

In the second half Campbell scored twice more before Grace Gleason opened the scoring for the Highlanders in the second half. Goeller also assisted the goal, adding to her strong stat line. At the 16:32 mark, Jessica Diorio added a goal of her own which was her fifth of the season. With just five seconds remaining on the clock, Radford got its last goal of the day from none other than Goeller who matched her break-out performance last Saturday with another hat trick today.

As a team, the Highlanders picked up 12 ground balls with Margaret Gleason and Libby Rehkemper leading the team with two each. Margaret Gleason also led the team in caused turnovers with two, in which the team enforced five total on the day.

Finishing up her day in the net, Bowman recorded eight more saves in the second half to total an incredible 16 on the day which is by far a season-high. The Camels came at Bowman early and often with 38 total shots on the day and Bowman stood strong recording a .516 save percentage to try and keep Radford within striking distance.
