Radford Drops Midweek Contest to Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Dac Archer's RBI single in the third inning was all Radford could push across Tuesday, as Liberty defeated the visiting Highlanders, 5-1, in a midweek game at Liberty Baseball Stadium.

The Flames took an early 2-0 lead on a 2-run homer in the second and never relinquished that lead.

Archer's RBI single was preceded by Garrett Matheny reaching base on an infield single, then avoiding a tag to swipe second. Matheny advanced to third on a groundout before Archer's base hit drove him home.

Radford had a chance to add to its total in the fourth when Connor Bagnieski, Anthony Galati and David Bryant each walked to load the bases, but a double play ended the inning and the Highlander scoring threat.

Liberty pushed a pair across in the fourth, as a pop fly with the bases loaded landed in between a trio of Highlanders and allowed two to score. The play would've ended the inning and left the bases loaded had it been caught.

The Flames threatened in the fifth with a pair of runners in scoring position, but Ty Burton notched back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the jam and end the inning.

Radford had runners on in the sixth, seventh and eighth but failed to score in all three innings. The Highlanders' best chance came in the seventh, when Tanner Barrs singled and Matheny was plunked to put two runners on. They both advanced on a wild pitch before a strikeout ended the inning, stranding them at second and third.

Liberty added a run on an RBI double in the eighth and a 1-2-3 top of the ninth sealed a four-run win for the home side.

STAT OF THE GAME
Derek Domecq forced inning-ending double plays in back-to-back innings. The southpaw got out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth with a 6-3 twin-killing, then induced a 4-6-3 double play in the seventh.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Barrs' seventh-inning single was his first hit of the year. After being plunked a team-high 11 times last season, Matheny's HBP in the seventh was his first of the season. Burton struck out a season-high three in 2.1 innings of relief work. Domecq's 2.2 innings out of the bullpen was his longest outing since a 3.2-inning stint at Georgia Southern on Feb. 28, 2020. Archer, Barrs, Bagnieski, Galati and Podaras each extended their respective active on-base streaks. Archer and Bagnieski also had their hit streaks extended to three and five games, respectively.
