Radford Topples Big South Preseason Favorites

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Radford (3-5, 1-0 BSC) took down the Big South preseason favorites Campbell (2-5, 0-1 BSC) Saturday afternoon in a come-from-behind 4-3 victory. This also marks the Highlanders first victory over the Camels since 2012.

The day got off to a great start for Radford who took the doubles point after close finishes on all three courts. After Campbell took court one, Radford responded on court three as Tyler Blalock and Katey Fruehauf won 6-4. On court two the Highlanders clinched the point in a tiebreaker as Malin Falk and Emily Brandow won 7-6(2).

With a 1-0 lead Radford turned to singles play and fell behind early. Campbell came out victorious on courts four, five, and six to take the 3-1 lead. Melissa Ifidzhen got Radford back in the win column on court two as she won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

With the score at 2-3, Radford turned its attention to courts one and three which would decide the match. The freshman Salma Loudili moved up to the top flight for the Highlanders for the first time in her career and pulled out a strong victory against Campbell's best 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. This tied the match at three all and put Falk in the spotlight with a chance to clinch. Falk bounced back from losing in her first set to make the full come back at 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 and seal the victory for Radford.

This is Radford's first road victory of the season after coming up just short in four other matches. Falk and Loudili are still tied for the team-high in singles victories with five each. Both of the Highlanders doubles pairings of Falk/Brandow and Fruehauf/Blalock are off to a strong start this season, with the two pairing boasting 5-2 records.
