
Highlanders Knock Off Unbeaten Runnin’ Bulldogs

RADFORD, Va. – Radford (6-5, 2-0 BSC) gave previously unbeaten Gardner-Webb (8-8, 3-1 BSC) its first loss of the season Friday afternoon in dominating fashion with a 6-1 final score.
Radford set the tone for the day by winning the doubles point through courts one and two. After a slow start, both doubles teams quickly adjusted and won decisively. Yevhen Sirous and Guilherme Severin finished first with a 6-3 win on court one while Demis Taramonlis and Andres Silva clinched on court two with a 6-3 win as well.
In singles play the Highlanders continued to dominate their opponent. Silva made quick work of his opponent on court five winning 6-2, 6-1 to give Radford the 2-0 lead. Next to finish was Sirous who played strong enough on court one that the result was never in doubt, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. Aditya Balsekar was the clincher for Radford, also winning in straight sets on court six 6-2, 6-2.
With a 4-0 lead, Radford turned its attention looking to finish strong on the three remaining courts. Konstantinos Raptis battled back after dropping his first set on court four to win 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 and make it a 5-0 lead. Severin also won in straight sets on court three 7-6(3), 6-2 to make it an incredible 6-0 Radford lead. Taramonlis was forced into three sets on court two and Radford just missed a sweep due to the quick tie breaker that went Gardner-Webb's way 11-9.
The freshman Balsekar is now up to an outstanding nine singles victories this season which is best on the team. Raptis is close behind with eight singles wins, and Sirous is now an even 5-5 on court one singles. Sirous and his doubles partner Severin are now 6-4 on court one which is the best record on the team.

The level of competition won't let up any time soon for Radford, who will hit the road to take on another conference unbeaten UNC Asheville on Sunday.
