Comeback Falls Short for Radford on Senior Day

RADFORD, Va. – A late comeback by the Radford women's lacrosse team fell short as the Highlanders lost to George Mason, 11-10, on Saturday afternoon as five seniors were honored pregame.

Lindsey Carroll was looking for her third goal of the game with less than a minute to play and Radford (0-5) down by one goal. She took a free position shot that went wide and was picked up by George Mason. The Patriots ran out the clock, despite the heavy pursuit for the Highlanders.

Ava Goeller put Radford in a position to tie the game when she scored a free position goal with 1:59 on the clock. Her career-high third goal of the game made the score 11-10 George Mason. Along with picking up her first multi-goal game of the season, the freshman notched her first career assist and tallied a career-high four points.

George Mason (1-3) scored early and fast taking a 4-0 lead with 5:24 off the clock to start the game. Radford scored five of the next six goals with five different goal-scorers and tied the game at five with 11:23 on the clock.

The Patriots went on a 3-1 run and took an 8-6 lead into halftime. Then the Highlanders scored two straight to open the second half – one from Margaret Gleason and the other by Goeller – that tied the game at eight.

Then Mason answered with two goals of their own until Lindsey Carroll made it a one-goal game with 7:33 to play. The Patriot's Erin Donoghue scored her third goal to put her team back up by two goals with less than five minutes to play.

Each goalkeeper had some great saves in the second half. George Mason's Maggie Donohue led with 13 saves in the game, while Maddie Bowman notched seven. Six of Bowman's seven saves came in the second half.

Radford led in shots (33-27), shots on goal (23-18) and the turnover battle (24-15).
