Radford Sweeps Winthrop in Doubleheader, Takes Weekend Series

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep on Saturday and won the weekend series over Winthrop. The first game saw the Highlanders win 11-1 in seven innings and the second was a back-and-forth affair where Radford won 6-4.

Game 1
Radford took advantage of a six-run first inning and went on to win via 10-run rule in seven innings as Jalen Buster scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch.

Sean Cheely and David Bryant scored the game's first two runs off a single by Connor Bagnieski. Three hits later, the Highlanders had a 6-0 lead before the end of the first inning that lasted a little over 50 minutes.

The game sped up a little as the next run didn't come until the fourth inning and it came from Winthrop. The Eagles plated a run from a single through the left side.

Radford added to its lead with three runs in the sixth inning thanks to a leadoff solo home run from Will Harless and a two-run double by Cheely. Jalen Buster tripled home pinch hitter Bryson Dansberry and then scored the 11th run of the game on a wild pitch.

Despite all the runs scored, Greg Duncan tossed seven innings and ended with a complete game. He only allowed one unearned run on six hits and struck out five for his fourth win of the season.

Harless, Anthony Galati and Buster each had two hits in the game. For Harless it's his second multi-hit game of the series. He and Buster tallied two RBIs, along with Cheely and Bagnieski.

Game 2
Each team broke into the scoring column in the third inning. Winthrop scored first on a sacrifice fly then Garrett Matheny negated that run with an RBI double that scored Jalen Buster.

Winthrop took the lead in the fourth inning, but Radford answered with a pair of runs thanks to Connor Bagnieski. He blasted a no-doubt home run to right field. His first long ball of the season gave Radford a 3-2 lead.

After the Eagles tied the game at three in the seventh inning, the Highlanders looked to regain the lead and did so in the bottom half of the inning. Back-to-back RBI singles by David Bryant and Straton Podaras gave Radford a 5-3 lead.

Each team traded a run in the eighth and Podaras proved why he's one of the best in the business getting the final out of the game throwing a runner out at third with the game-tying run at the dish.

Ryan Bywaters tossed six innings of six hit baseball and only allowed two runs. He struck out six of his 27 batters faced. Alex Perkins earned the victory pitching three innings with four strikeouts and two runs allowed.

Matheny, Cheely, Podaras and Buster each had two hits in the game. Bagnieski led the way with two RBIs.
