Radford Racks Up Eight Aces in Loss at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Radford volleyball team was competitive but fell in a three-set affair that was closer than it first appears to Campbell in the season finale Friday evening.

The Highlanders forced a long set in the opening set, never allowing Campbell to lead by more than four. Radford tallied a game-high five aces in the set, with two important aces coming from Grace Green late. Radford trailed 17-20 and came out of their own timeout to go on a 4-0 run to take the 21-20 lead thanks to two errors by Campbell and back-to-back aces by Green. Campbell would take a timeout, but Radford extended the lead to 23-20 thanks to kills from Hailey Flowers and Samantha Reitz. The set would go past the 25-point mark, but it went the Camels way 27-25.

Radford was just as competitive in the second set, again not allowing Campbell to lead by more than four. Late in the set trailing 19-22, Radford went on another 4-0 run to claim a 23-22 lead thanks to three errors by Campbell. From there the set was all tied up and neither team gained an advantage right away. Jordan Coomes, Emily Dykes, Kennedi Johnson, and Flowers provided big kills to keep the score tied, but Campbell ultimately walked away with the set 30-28.

Campbell did find its biggest lead of the day in set three early at 2-7, but the set was just as close the previous two. Green helped spark a rally with another ace followed by a kill from Johnson. Campbell would rip off five straight kills to make it 13-18 and take control of the set. They would finish with a 20-25 score, putting an end to the Highlanders regular season.

Radford finished with eight total aces in the game, which is the most they've recorded since they also recorded eight against UNC Asheville on March 11th. Radford also committed two less service aces and had one more block than Campbell did in the match.

Green led the defensive effort with 15 digs, her eighth game this season recording double-digit digs and pushed her over the 100 digs mark on the season and 900 digs mark in her career. Dykes had the team high in block assists with four, with Johnson and Reitz also recording three.

The offensive effort was led by Flowers who recorded six kills, finishing with 106 kills this season which is second highest on the team. Johnson tallied five kills with Dykes just behind her with four. Green had a team high four aces while O'Neal also record two aces of her own.
