Radford Falls to No. 1 Campbell to Open Big South Tournament

RADFORD, Va.Destiny Freeman's efforts at the plate and Jessie Marvin's outing in the circle fell just short as the Radford softball team fell to No. 1 Campbell, 3-2, on Thursday in the first round of the Big South Tournament.

Freeman went 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. She had two of Radford's four hits in the game. On the other side, Marvin was lights out with five strikeouts and only two hits allowed through five innings.

The first run of the game came in the second inning when Freeman scored from third on a play off the bat of Autumn Slemaker. She hit a ball to second base but the Camel second baseman threw it home and Freeman slid under the tag. Freeman was able to put herself in scoring position with a one-out triple. It was Radford's first hit of the game.

Freeman plated the second run of the game with a single up the middle in the sixth inning that scored Riley Oakes. Oakes started the inning with a one-out single then moved to second on a Madison Canady walk. Then Freeman stepped in and delivered the second RBI putting Radford ahead 2-0. Unfortunately, the Highlanders left the bases loaded and that proved to be costly.

After Marvin allowed two hits in the first inning, she retired eight batters in a row until a one-out walk in the fourth inning. However, she earned five straight putouts, three groundouts and two strikeouts to have a scoreless stat line through five.

She ran into a little trouble in the sixth with a leadoff single and a one-out walk putting the go-ahead run at the plate in Claire Blount. She picked up her second hit of the day and it came in big fashion with a home run to right center field.

The Highlanders were able to get a base runner in the seventh inning as Sydney Fisher tallied a two-out single but a fly out to center ended the game.
