Highlanders’ Strong First Half Not Enough in Big South Championship Game

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Highlanders impressive season came to a close Sunday afternoon as the third seeded Radford (6-12) fell to the one seed High Point (10-7) in a final score of 7-20. The match was close throughout most of the first half, as Radford's defense stifled the fast-moving High Point offense.

The Highlander offense got its start from freshman Ava Goeller who was coming off a stellar performance against Campbell earlier this weekend. Goeller won the draw control and ran downhill finding the net with ease to tie the game at one-all.

Goeller responded once again for the Highlanders after High Point took a 2-1 lead. The Panthers committed a turnover that Goeller picked up and it appeared she would run down the field and score with ease similar to her first goal until it was called back due to a foul. Goeller scored the goal off a free position shot anyways, and the game was once again tied at two.

Just a minute later Margaret Gleason found an open look in front of the net but the High Point goalie made an incredible save to keep the game tied. From there the defense did a great job at limiting a High Point offense that can score quickly. Many of the Panthers' offensive possessions were forced to be drawn out through the full length of the shot clock and Maddie Bowman made five quality saves to keep the scoring low.

High Point was able to put together a 4-0 run to take a 2-6 lead, though, until Grace Gleason ended the run thanks to a pass from her sister to make it just a 3-6 deficit. On the defensive end, Katie Bendrick caused a great turnover on what could've been an open shot for the Panthers which led to G. Gleason scoring her second straight goal to make it 4-7.

High Point would score two more goals before the half ended, making it a 4-9 game at the half. The Highlander defense finished with causing seven turnovers in the first half with Rachel Rogers leading the team with two. Seven of the offense's eight shots were on goal while the team also won four draw controls led by Goeller with two.

Unfortunately, in the second half High Point took control with a 5-1 run that would ultimately push the match out of reach. The Highlander goal came from Brittany Rinaldi who scored her first goal since she netted five earlier this season at Liberty.

Halfway through the second half Goeller completed the hat trick, finishing the season with 12 straight games with a goal and eight hat tricks over that span. The Highlanders would score one more goal, once again from Goeller, as the game came to a close.

Goeller's four goals on the day led the team as she book-ended a historic season. Lindsey Carroll, M. Gleason, and Goeller all also added assists while Rogers led the team with five ground balls. Rogers finished with three caused turnovers as well which tied for leading the team, while Goeller and Bendrick combined for ten of the team's draw controls won.
