Marvin’s One-Hit Bid Carries Radford Past Norfolk State

RADFORD, Va.Jessie Marvin only allowed one hit and the Highlander offense did the rest as the Radford softball team topped Norfolk State, 7-1, on Tuesday evening at Radford Softball Stadium.

The game was originally set to begin at 2 p.m., with another to follow but the rain came in and delayed the game for three hours to a 5 p.m., first pitch. With a doubleheader set for Wednesday there was no need for two on Tuesday and the field conditions only allowed one.

Marvin only allowed one run along with her one hit. They both came in the fifth inning. The one-out hit came one at-bat after a walk to put runners on the corners. Marvin loaded the bases after hitting a batter and the lone run came on a four-pitch walk. The senior was able to end the inning getting Jazzmaine Hammond to fly out to Riley Oakes in center field. Lily Potter tested Oakes trying to score from third but Oakes threw a dart to get her out and keep a crooked number off the scoreboard.

Marvin threw 7.0 innings with five strikeouts and only five baserunners – four walks and one hit-by-pitch. She threw 102 pitches and tallied 62 strikes.

On the other end, Oakes went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. She drove in the final two runs of the game, creating a 7-1 margin in the sixth inning. Madison Canady broke open a 1-1 tie with a three-run double in the fifth. She came around to score on an error on the next-at bat making it a 5-1 game.

The Highlanders scored the first run of the contest in the first inning on a throwing error by the Spartan second basemen. Sydney Fisher had the other multi-hit game and the other double.
