Highlanders Drop Close Contest to Campbell, 2-1

RADFORD, Va. — In a matchup that pitted two of the hottest teams in the Big South Conference, the Radford men's soccer team narrowly fell to Campbell 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Cupp Stadium. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Highlanders, the longest active streak in the conference.

"Campbell is a really good team, but so are we," said Radford head coach Chris Barrett. "With that being said, I didn't think we were as sharp as we needed to be at some key moments. I was really pleased with our reaction after they scored. We scored a beautiful goal to tie the game. The boys are disappointed with the loss, but we gained some confidence that we can play with the best teams in the conference. We still control our destiny to the postseason with the next two conference games. We will learn from this game and continue to work hard to improve each day in training."

After surrendering the first goal of the match, Radford (4-8-1, 3-3-0 Big South) was able to find the equalizer late just before intermission. In the 41st minute, Mateo Perez Nance played a long pass to Tony Martinez from near midfield. Martinez gathered the ball outside the penalty area, and side-winded a wicked shot to the top right corner of the net, beating keeper Edu Rodriguez and evening the match at 1-1.

The deciding goal came late in the second half, as Campbell's Adrian Morales received a pass from Daniel Osei-Tutu inside the 18-yard box, and chipped it past Radford keeper Joseba Incera to put his team ahead 2-1 in the 74th minute.

The game was evenly played, with the Fighting Camels (8-3-3, 4-1-1) holding a 14-10 edge in shots, and a slim 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Campbell also led in corner kicks, 7-3.

Rodriguez earned the win in net, making four saves for the visitors. Incera also made four saves.
