SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Radford volleyball team went a full five sets against USC Upstate, holding on for a 3-2 victory on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Highlanders move to 7-13 overall and 3-5 in Big South play while the Spartans drop to 6-15 overall and 3-5 against Big South opponents.
Radford looked like a team on a mission to start the match, cruising to a 25-17 win in the first set. The squad posted 16 kills and only five errors for a .333 hitting percentage compared to 10 kills and six errors (.129 H%) for the opposition.
The second set was more of the same as the Highlanders played extremely well for a 25-16 win to go up 2-0 in the match. This time they used a game-high four aces and four total blocks to double the lead.
Seemingly out of nowhere, the roles flipped in the third set as the Spartans dominated to the tune of a 25-7 win to stay alive. They held Radford to just one kill while earning a 9-to-2 advantage in errors.
A 25-13 fourth set kept the USC Upstate momentum going and the pivotal match would come down to one final bout.
The Highlanders jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the final set and doubled up USC Upstate's kill total (8-to-4) to earn a decisive 15-8 victory and seal the deal.
Grace Tulevech had a season high 16 kills on the day, tallying 17.5 points on a spectacular .412 hitting percentage on 34 attempts. Five different Highlanders joined her in the attack with 5+ kills.
