Radford Falls to Tennessee Tech 10-5

MOBILE, Ala. – The Radford Baseball team mustered a middle-innings rally, but ultimately fell short in 10-5 loss to Tennessee Tech on Saturday afternoon in the South Alabama Invitiational.

It was a tough day offensively for Radford, as the Highlanders mustered just two hits. They did, however, draw seven walks, including four in the first inning alone. Right fielder Paul Moore drew a bases-loaded free pass to drive in the first run of the game, while first baseman Tanner Barrs did the same, scoring teammate David Bryant to give Radford a 2-0 advantage.

But the Golden Eagles (2-0) responded quickly, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the first. They tacked on four more in the fourth inning to jump out ahead 9-2.

Radford was able to take advantage of Tennessee Tech's poor defense, as the Golden Eagles committed five errors. Three of those occurred in the fifth inning, and Radford took advantage. After a single by Bradlee Preap, Moore reached on a fielding error by the second basemen, plating Bryant. Left fielder Adam Morris then chipped in with an RBI fielder's choice, and then came around to score on another error by the Golden Eagles' first baseman.

But the Highlanders couldn't sustain the rally, as they recorded just one hit in the final four innings.

Carter Gannaway (1-0) earned the win for Tennessee Tech, tossing five innings and allowing no earned runs with three strikeouts. He came in relief of starter Brock Smith, whom the Highlanders tagged for two runs before he recorded an out.

NOTABLE STATS
  • Preap went 2-for-4 on the day with a walk and a run, the only Highlander to record multiple hits.
  • Jackson VanTassell pitched a scoreless seventh inning and eighth inning.
