Highlanders Power Their Way To Comeback Victory Over VMI

RADFORD, Va. — A season-high 18 hits, including another season-high of four home runs, fueled a 12-11 comeback victory over VMI at Carter Memorial Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Highlanders produced double-digit runs for the third time this year, pushing at least one runner across home plate in six different innings. Radford improves to 8-17 overall while the Keydets drop to an identical 8-17.

A trio of freshmen fueled the offense all night. Ty Dooley went a perfect 5-for-5 with four RBI and four runs scored while James Taussig added four RBI and three runs scored of his own on a 3-for-4 night. Avery Spencer then went ahead and delivered a 3-for-3 night as well.

It was the Highlanders who jumped out in front first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning thanks to a Julian Rojas blast over the left field fence. The advantage then grew to 3-0 before VMI exploded in the 4thinning.

The visitors recorded hit after hit, notching a staggering nine runs in the frame until senior lefty Derek Domecq stopped the bleeding.

Just like the have all season, the Highlanders showed an uncommon resilience and chipped away at the deficit, scoring four in the bottom of the 4th off of a Dooley grand slam, one in the 5th, and two more in the 6thbehind Taussig's first career home run.

Taussig would come up big one more time, cranking another two-run shot in the 8th inning to score the deciding runs.

William Flanagan earned the start on the bump and tossed three scoreless frames. Ty Burton was needed in relief and he came up big, striking out four Keydets across three innings of one-run ball. John Holobetz conceded just one run in the final two innings to earn his second career win.
