HIGH POINT, N.C. — Zach Davidson pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits and no walks, as Radford took down High Point 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Williard Stadium. With the win, the Highlanders won their second consecutive Big South series.
Davidson (1-2) was masterful from the third inning on. After surrendering a hit by pitch and a single, the junior southpaw got a ground ball double play to get out of the inning. That twin killing was the first of 19 consecutive batters retired to end the game, as Davidson only let two Panthers reach safely the entire way.
Radford (12-23, 6-9 Big South) was led offensively by right fielder
Avery Spencer, who went 3-for-5 with two RBI. He got the scoring started in the second inning, doubling to left field to score left fielder
Adam Morris and catcher
Julian Rojas.
The Highlanders' only other run of the game came in the eighth, when Pittman doubled down the right field line to plate Rojas. Pittman was also effective at the plate, recording two hits and two walks, his team-leading 24th and 25th free passes of the season.
High Point (12-24, 7-8) saw starter Sam Garcia knocked out after five innings, giving up two earned runs. Garcia earned a tough-luck loss, surrendering three hits and three walks.
With the shutout, Davidson earned his first victory of the season, and his first in a Highlander uniform. He was also incredibly efficient, needing just 95 pitches to record 27 outs.
