Moss’ Big Day Highlights Doubleheader Split with Gardner-Webb

RADFORD, Va. –The Radford softball program split their doubleheader with Gardner-Webb Saturday afternoon to take their second Big South series of the season. Jordan Moss had a huge offensive day as Radford fell in the first game 6-3 but bounced back to win game two 5-0.

Game 1
In game one the Highlanders got off to a good start but fell victim to some untimely errors. Emily Spingarn got the starting nod and was perfect in the first inning collecting her first strikeout of the day. A couple of walks allowed Gardner-Webb to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning, however.

The Highlanders responded in the second inning to take the lead with two runs. After two quick outs Radford loaded the bases through a hit by pitch and two walks. Moss stepped up to the plate and delivered her first big hit of the day with a double scoring Abby Wilson and Cassi Barbato.

All was quiet over the next two innings before Gardner-Webb struck again in the fifth. A throwing error allowed a Runnin' Bulldog to advance to third and eventually score off a groundout. The game remained tied until the sixth when another error allowed Gardner-Webb to pull ahead 3-2.

The third and most costly error of the game came in the seventh as the Runnin' Bulldogs were able to build their lead to 6-2. Radford would not go out without a fight, however.

Emily Smith started the seventh by reaching through an error and advanced home thanks to another Moss double that made it a 6-3 game. Rachel Smith and Lindsay Hunter both walked to load the bases to bring up the heart of Radford's order.

Cori McMillan did crush a ball that could've walked off the game, but it tailed foul. Gardner-Webb got some bounces to go their way to end the threat in the seventh and hold on to win 6-3.

Game 2
The second game of the day went more in the Highlanders' favor thanks to some early scoring and great pitching. Jessie Marvin got the start for Radford and threw three scoreless innings allowing just two hits which allowed Radford's early offensive burst to pave the win to the win.

With runners on first and second Madison Canady crushed a ball that unfortunately went straight to the opposing pitcher's glove. Gardner-Webb's pitcher was a little shaken up on the play and needed to be pulled. Hannah Poole took the first pitch she saw from the new pitcher and parked it over the right field wall to put Radford up 3-0.

From there, the Highlanders cruised. The defense cleaned up and committed not a single error in game two. Radford added on two more runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a Moss single for two more RBIs and the 5-0 lead.

Skyler DeHart entered for Radford in the fourth and was practically flawless over the final four frames. DeHart gave up just two baserunners while striking out two batters and allowing no runners to cross home plate. That allowed the final score of 5-0 to hold and give Radford the weekend series victory over Gardner-Webb
