Smith's First Career RBI Highlights Baseball's 8-6 Win Over ETSU

RADFORD, Va. — Seeing his first extended action of the season, freshman Riley Smith recorded an RBI double in the seventh inning — his first in a Highlander uniform — as the Radford baseball team took down East Tennessee State 8-6 on Tuesday evening at Carter Memorial Stadium.

Smith, who was playing in his just his fourth game all year, sent a line drive down the right field line that scored shortstop Ty Dooley from second base. It was also his first career hit, as he gave Radford an 8-5 lead.

Things certainly did not start promising for the Highlanders. In the third inning, ETSU first baseman Bryce Hodge started the scoring with a two-run double. Garett Wallace followed that up with a two-run homer to give the visitors a 4-0 lead.

But Radford (13-27) had the response. After first baseman Julian Rojas drew a bases-loaded walk, DH James Taussig came through with an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-2. Third baseman Ryan Gilmore and center fielder Adam Morris added run-scoring singles of their own, as the Highlanders scored five runs in the inning to take the lead.

Later in the fourth inning, Radford again scored on a bases-loaded free pass, as catcher Brendan Bagwell earned the base on bells to put his team ahead 6-5.

The Highlanders held ETSU (24-13) at bay for the rest of the game, never relinquishing the lead. In the ninth inning, LHP Derek Domecq came in and shut the door, earning his first save of the season.

With the win, Radford beat the Buccaneers for the first time in three tries this season, with ETSU winning the previous two matchups at their home ballpark. Will Hunt (1-2) was the winning pitcher for the Red & White, while Cade Carlson took the loss for East Tennessee State.
