Bend Don’t Break, Highlanders Take Series Opener Against Buccaneers

RADFORD, VA. – The Radford softball program showed resilience Friday afternoon in their 5-2 victory over Charleston Southern. The Buccaneers had a hot offensive start filling up the basepaths, but the Highlanders never broke in the big win.

To begin the game Radford got a boost from one of the top freshmen in the country, Cori McMillan, who snuck her 13th home run of the season over the left field fence to lead off the bottom of the first.

Over the first three innings the Buccaneers totaled seven baserunners, but were only able to score two runners thanks to some stellar defense by the Highlanders. In the second inning, McMillan turned a smooth double play off a line drive to clear the base paths. Later in that inning, the Buccaneers tied the game off a double, but Jordan Moss gunned down the runner advancing to third to end the threat.

In the third inning, Rachel Smith made a neat defensive play with an over-the-back catch on a line drive for the first out of the inning. The game's starter Jessie Marvin also picked up two huge strikeouts to keep it a 2-2 game.

In the fourth inning, Marvin was excellent when it counted most once again. With a runners on second and third with just one out she dialed up two more strikeouts to escape the inning. After that, Charleston Southern only had one base runner over the final three innings.

That stellar stretch by Marvin to end the game allowed Radford to take a lead in the fifth inning, one that they wouldn't give back. With two outs, McMillan got the rally started with a single to center field. Abby Wilson then provided a huge two-out double to right field that allowed McMillan to score and make it a 3-2 Radford advantage.

In the sixth inning, Radford got some appreciated insurance thanks to Rachel Smith. Cassi Barbato singled down the right field line, and in a hitter's count, Smith took full advantage crushing her fifth home run of the season to opposite field making it a 5-2 lead. That advantage would hold in the seventh as Radford picked up the win to start their weekend.

McMillan, Barbato and Smith all ended their afternoons with multi-hit games. Jordan Moss' also bumped her season batting average back over .300 with a hit today. Marvin's stellar pitching performance against a tough Buccaneer offense ended with eight strikeouts, bumping her season total 95 in 121.1 innings pitched.
