Softball Battles Hard, Falls in Big South Tournament

FARMVILLE, VA. –The Radford softball program fell in the Big South Tournament Wednesday afternoon, dropping games against Longwood and Presbyterian. Jessie Marvin was stellar in both contests, doing well to limit two potent offenses.

Game 1
The Highlanders had a close battle in their first game of the day, the tournament opener for the team. Radford took on third-seeded Longwood who was in a three-way tie for first in the Big South before tiebreakers pushed them down to the third seed.

Facing one of the best Big South pitchers this year, the Highlanders battled at the plate all afternoon to get baserunners. Jessie Marvin showed her postseason colors once again with six innings of one-run ball. The Lancers tallied nine hits, but Marvin avoided walks and shut down multiple threats to give up just the one run.

In the second inning, Radford had runners on second and third with two out but couldn't scratch across a runner. Hannah Poole broke up the no-hitter to lead off the fifth inning, but it was Radford's only hit of the day.

Down to their final inning the Highlanders did not go away quietly. With two outs Emily Smith and Lindsay Hunter drew back-to-back walks to try and spark a rally. A strikeout ended the inning and the game for Radford, forcing them into an elimination against Presbyterian later in the afternoon.

Game 2
The second game of the day was a similar story to the first as pitching kept the Highlanders in the game, but the offense wasn't able to cash in on its scoring opportunities. Marvin got the starting nod for the second game and was efficient through the first two innings.

Presbyterian laced two home runs in the game to give themselves the 3-0 advantage. In the fifth inning, senior Lindsay Hunter attempted to spark the offense with a loud double to right center. Kyndall Stanley, pinch running, was left stranded to end the inning.

Radford kept trying to chip away as they mounted another comeback in the sixth inning. Cori McMillan and Abby Wilson both worked walks to start the inning and Rachel Smith moved them both into scoring position with a ground out. Two straight outs ended the threat however, as Radford would go on to fall in the elimination game 3-0.

The losses mark the end for the Highlanders season that featured tons of talent by both the new upcoming talent and the veteran leaders. Marvin has solidified herself in the Highlanders' record book while McMillan, Jordan Moss, Emily Smith, Rachel Smith and so many others marked themselves as Highlanders to keep an eye on in the coming years.
