RADFORD, Va. — Capping off a picture-perfect senior day, DH
James Taussig hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift the Radford baseball team past Longwood 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at Carter Memorial Stadium. With the victory, the Highlanders took the season series from the Lancers, two games to one.
Before the game, Radford honored their seven seniors —
Peyton Reesman,
Adam Morris,
Ty Burton,
David Bryant,
Brandon Feathers,
Storm Mace, and
Derek Domecq — in addition to student manager
Mason Collins.
In the eight inning, left fielder
Tanner Barrs got the rally started with a leadoff four-pitch walk. With Radford trailing 5-4, Taussig promptly launched a fly ball to left that sailed over the wall, putting the Highlanders (15-31, 8-13 Big South) ahead for the first time all day.
RHP
Ty Burton was able to seal the deal, tossing a scoreless ninth inning to earn his second win of the year. Burton had come in to the game during the eighth, and induced a ground ball double play to end the Lancer threat.
Longwood (20-30, 10-11 Big South) got out to an early lead, scoring twice in the second inning. In the home half of the frame, Taussig checked in with the first of his three RBI, singling to left to score catcher
Julian Rojas.
Later in the third inning, second baseman
Ty Dooley drew a bases-loaded walk, while center fielder
Cameron Pittman came home to score on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 4-3.
RHP
Foster Seitz pitched well in relief of Reesman, who started the game and was knocked out in the third inning. Seitz tossed 4.2 innings, allowing only one run on three hits.
Michael Tolson (0-2) took the loss for Longwood, as he gave up the decisive home run off the bat of Taussig.
NOTABLE STATS
- Pittman extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI single in the fourth.
- Radford held the visitors to just one run over the final six innings.
- The Highlanders drew more walks (6) than they had strikeouts (5).
