Historic Men’s Tennis Season Comes to An End in NCAA First Round

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Radford (14-8, 6-1 BSC) fell 4-0 to the ninth-seeded Wake Forest Friday afternoon in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Highlanders were competitive across the board facing one of the better teams in the country this year. In the doubles point, both of the pairings on courts two and three had tight matches. Guilherme Severin and Konstantinos Raptis did have a lead early while Raptis' serve was a bit too much to handle for the Deacons. Balsekar and Hagen were also tied late before going unfinished.

While Radford wasn't able to take any singles courts before Wake Forest took three to clinch, there were still a handful of players who proved they belonged in the spotlight. Multiple Highlanders including Demis Taramonlis, Balsekar and Raptis were all in the running for taking a court had the match been played in full.

Both Balsekar and Raptis burst out the gates in the first sets of their matches. Raptis went ahead 3-1 against his opponent before a tight battle ultimately went his opponent's way. Balsekar also jumped ahead 3-0 but fell in a tiebreaker in the first set and had just started his second set before play started. The pace of play for Balsekar was similar to his win earlier this season over N.C. State where the sophomore bounced back after dropping the first set.

Finally, there was Taramonlis who did not let a tough first set get him down. The Big South Player of the Year took on one of the better players in the ACC battling back in the second set and was on the verge of forcing a third set before Wake Forest clinched.

Today's match marked the end of the season for the Highlanders, an incredible season to be remembered. Balsekar will finish the season with another insane winning streak. Taramonlis proved himself to be the best in the Big South. Raptis put the Highlanders back on top with his huge Championship clincher. Robert Hagen turned heads with his freshman of the week honors. Guilherme Severin also continues to show his prowess in doubles play with first-team conference honors and helping clinch crucial doubles points all spring. And finally the senior captain Andres Silva, who's academic years and playing years aren't fully done, will go out with two championship rings to his name as a Highlander.
