FAIRFAX, Va. — The Radford men's soccer team conceded two goals in the second half as they fell to George Mason, 3-1, in non-conference action on Saturday evening at George Mason Stadium.
"I was really happy with our first half," said Radford head coach
Chris Barrett. "We gave up a goal, but I was pleased with our reaction and effort to get the goal back. We made a couple mistakes in the second half that I don't think we will make again, and good teams Like George Mason will punish us for that. We will learn and be better because of this. I believe in this team and know we will have better days ahead."
George Mason (1-3-0) opened the scoring roughly midway through the first half, as Noah Raphael found the back of the net in the 27th minute.
However, the Highlanders soon had a response, as
Jared Dubose was the beneficiary of a misplay by George Mason in front of the penalty box. In the 42nd minute, Dubose collected an errant pass and found himself all alone in front of the goal, depositing the shot into the net to even the score.
The play was fairly even in the first half, but the Patriots ultimately took control after intermission, scoring two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half. The first came from Ariel Aguas on a penalty kick in the 46th minute, while Louis Lehr followed that up with a marker in the 59th.
Radford (0-3-1) was out-shot 16-6 on the night, with
Mateo Perez Nance recording two shots in his second consecutive start. The visitors did, however, record five corner kicks to George Mason's four.
Highlanders' keeper
Joseba Incera made three saves in the loss. Midfielder
Samuel Schwarz registered the only other shot on goal for Radford, in addition to the goal by Dubose.
