Men’s Tennis Makes Good First Impression in First Fall Tournament

ELON, N.C. – The Radford men's tennis program opened up their Fall Tournament season with some quality individual wins at the Elon Invitational this past weekend.
On Friday the Highlanders got things going with some doubles and singles victories. Robert Hagen dispatched an opponent from UNC Greensboro 6-0, 6-3 while Filippo Marangoni picked up his first win as a Highlander 6-1, 6-2 over an opponent from North Carolina Central. Rounding out the singles wins was Manfredi Vergine who defeated his North Carolina Central opponent 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-1.
In doubles play on Friday Radford picked up four victories. Demis Taramonlis and Konstantinos Raptis teamed up and took down a Furman opponent 6-4. Raphael Mujan and Hagen picked up a pair of victories in the afternoon slate defeating doubles teams from North Carolina Central and Queens (NC). Rounding out the doubles wins was Marangoni and Vergine who picked up a 6-4 win over UNC Greensboro.
On Saturday the Highlanders competed primarily in singles play. Taramonlis got back in the win column by taking down his Furman opponent 6-2, 6-3. Raptis had a long Saturday where he went three sets twice and picked up wins over Queens (NC) and North Carolina Central to advance to the finals of his bracket. Mujan would collect a victory over Big South foe Longwood in three-set fashion 4-6, 6-1, 10-4 to round out the victories on the day.
On Sunday Radford had one singles player and two doubles pairings playing in the finals of their respective brackets. Raptis competed against Liberty but fell in a tough match. In doubles play Marangoni and Vergine came close but were just edged out in a 6-4 defeat to James Madison.
The Highlanders will be back in action in a couple weeks when the team heads to Charlottesville, Va. to compete in the ITA Regionals between October 19th and October 24th.
