RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over Longwood in Saturday evening's matchup in Cupp Stadium to keep conference playoff hopes alive.
The Highlanders found themselves with a 1-0 lead early in today's matchup against the Lancers, in a contest that was high intensity the moment the first whistle blew.
In the 9th minute, Endjick Albert was able to capitalize after a debacle in Longwood's penalty area gave him the opportunity to take the shot that would give the Highlanders the advantage. The Highlanders had a couple of other chances that would've allowed them to double their lead, but were unable to find the back of the net. The intensity in the first half remained the same as both teams played an aggressive style but the Highlanders held the opposition scoreless thanks to two crucial saves by Alex Eydelman that would keep the scoreline 1-0 heading into the half.
Both sides went back and forth in the attack, with Longwood managing a good stretch of possession, but the defense never wavered. The Highlanders were able to create more opportunities to potentially double the lead once more in the competition but once again were unable to capitalize on those chances.
With 15 minutes left in regulation, Longwood had their best chance to find the equalizer they were looking for. The Lancers attempted three shots in a 2-minute span but the pressure from the Highlander defense, along with a save by Eydelman, kept the Highlanders on top. Each team produced a pair of opportunities in the offensive third before the clock hit zero as both defenses stood tall.
Aggresive play from both Radford and Longwood kept the officials busy with 25 total fouls being called - 13 from Radford and 12 from Longwood. The Highlanders still have the opportunity to make the Big South tournament if they continue their winning ways in conference play.
