LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Highlanders found great success as they opened the 2023-24 Indoor Track & Field season Friday at the Liberty Kickoff. Sophomores Elyssia Fisher and Raichelle Cornelius led the team in their events while also making new personal records at 7.88 apiece in the 60 meter dash.
Â
Cornelius also clocked in at 25.78 in the 200 dash finals, earning 12th place. Additionally in the 200 meter dash, two Highlanders achieved PR's. Jordan Jackson ran a time of 26.79, while Sela Beatty sprinted at 26.88 landing the duo in 31st and 33rd place.
In the women's long jump Fisher and Katja Kehlenbeck earned a place in the top-10. Fisher hurled herself to fifth place (5.42m). Kehlenbeck was just two spots behind to land her in seventh place (5.29m), making her the first freshman to make the long jump finals.
Â
Jaylen Rosser and Mya Rosser also found themselves in the top-10 in the shot put finals. Jaylen Rosser came in ninth place with a new PR of 10.74m (35' 2¾").
Â
Radford took their section by storm in the 4x400 relay, beating Richmond. This success was possible thanks to a great leg from Kandace McIvor to set up Jordan Jackson for the win.
Â
This season's team has a bright future ahead of them as they are eager to be great, not just good. With the diverse culture, the team looks for not only a strong, competitive season, but an overall fun and successful environment.
