RALEIGH, N.C. – The Radford softball program was back in action for the first time in over a week on Wednesday against a tough ACC foe N.C. State. Radford got off to a hot start in the contest with a six-run third inning, but it wasn't enough as NC State clawed back in the 8-7 final.
Radford started the game down 2-0 after a first-inning home run but wouldn't back down. In the third inning the bats got going in a big way with six runs. Emily Smith started the inning with a double and after a single by Laura Thompson, the Highlanders only trailed 2-1.
A bunt single by Lexie Roberts put two runners on and Kari Shedrick singled to load the bases. Cori McMillan wasted no time laying down a bunt of her own with a squeeze opportunity. Thanks to a throwing error, Thompson was able to score and Radford had two runners in scoring position in a 3-2 game. After a wild pitch, Radford built on its first lead of the game 4-2.
Rachel Smith kept the line moving with a triple, her fourth of the season, scoring McMillan and making it 5-2. Right where the inning started, Emily Smith singled up the middle to score Rachel Smith and balloon the lead all the way to 6-2.
After a pair of runs scored in the bottom of the third, freshman Chloe Greene came in to pitch relief and kept the Highlanders in the lead. Radford got an insurance run in the fourth inning thanks to a two-out single by Rachel Smith that scored Lexie Roberts.
Leading 7-4, the Highlanders fell victim to a pair of defensive miscues that allowed the Wolfpack to gain some momentum. Tied at seven-all headed into the bottom of the seventh, N.C. State struck at the first pitch they saw for a walk off home run in the 8-7 final.

The Highlanders focus moves to Big South play where the team starts on the road at Winthrop this weekend. After a doubleheader on Saturday, Radford and Winthrop will square off on ESPNU Sunday at 2 p.m.
