Radford Brings Out the Blocks, Ultimately Falls to Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Radford volleyball program had one of their better blocking games of the season at Winthrop Friday night but ultimately fell short in a 3-1 final.

KEY STATS
  • Radford has posted back-to-back matches with double digit blocks with 11 at USC Upstate last week and 12 tonight against Winthrop.
  • Alana Kolb and Aubrey Hatch led the blocking with five total blocks each.
  • Olivia Flanagan continues to step up for the Highlanders with 11 kills tonight, a team high.
  • Sophie Paspal and Hatch each had strong hitting nights as well with nine kills apiece.

PLAY BY PLAY
The Eagles began the match with a hitting frenzy that the Highlanders would look to quickly calm down. Winthrop began the match hitting quite well which allowed them to pull ahead early and take the first set decisively, 25-16.

Regrouping for the second set, Radford's defense was up to the task of stopping Winthrop's attack. Radford came alive at the net totaling six blocks in the second set to help bring that hitting percentage down for Winthrop. With some timely kills from Flanagan, Paspal and Hatch on top of it, Radford was able to respond with a 25-16 set victory of their own.

With the match evened up, the intensity evened on both sides as well. Radford and Winthrop each traded points throughout a tight third set. Down 11-9, however, the Eagles gained a big advantage with a 6-0 run. Radford tried battling back, scoring five of the last eight points of the set, but it was Winthrop who held on to take the third set 25-19.

In the fourth set, the hosts continued their hot streak using multiple runs throughout the set to put things away. Despite another late 3-0 run by the Highlanders, the Eagles held on to take the final set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
