Volleyball Comes Back From Down Two Sets, Falls Just Short Against UNC Asheville

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford volleyball program went down 2-0 early Saturday afternoon to UNC Asheville and used an incredible comeback effort to force five sets before falling just short 3-2.

KEY STATS
  • Sophie Paspal had another strong performance totaling 13 kills and six block assists.
  • Kennedy Robinson also continued her hot streak as of late with 11 kills and a pair of aces.
  • After hitting sub-100 through the first two sets, Radford came back with a force for the final three sets to pull their hitting percentage back up to .211.
  • Radford is still just one of two teams in the Big South, the other being High Point, that hasn't been swept yet in conference play.

PLAY BY PLAY
UNC Asheville entered Saturday's contest with a strong start as the Bulldogs would quickly put up a 5-2 lead. Radford would get its offense through a host of options in the early-going, getting kills from Paspal, Aubrey Hatch and Alana Kolb. A 6-1 run would help Radford tie the set at 14-14 before UNC Asheville responded with a 5-1 run of their own to pull away and eventually seal the first set 25-21.

Not much went right for the Highlanders in the second set. UNC Asheville used multiple extended runs to take a 2-0 lead in the match, winning the set 25-15.

Needing to bounce back, Radford came out of the locker room with a new fire. The team would go down early 9-3 in the set, but an incredible 6-0 run would immediately tie things back up. Multiple Bulldogs errors and a pair of kills from Moore helped Radford grab its first set lead since early in the first set.

Up 12-11, Radford would go on a 7-1 run led by Robinson's kills and Taryn Roberts' serve to fully pull ahead. By the end of the third set, Radford had won decisively 25-16 to pull the match closer at 2-1.

Keeping that intensity rolling, Radford would never trail by more than two points in the fourth set. Early runs and a healthy serving of kills from Rylee Sloss, Olivia Flanagan, Hatch and Paspal would have Radford pacing ahead of UNC Asheville. Up 18-16, the team would go on a 5-1 run to grab a big advantage and eventually win the fourth set 25-20.

In a fifth set for the second time this season during conference play, but at home for the first time, Radford and UNC Asheville were both locked in a battle of trading points. Service errors on both sides would prove costly, but it was UNC Asheville who held on to take the fifth set 15-12 and the match 3-2.

AROUND THE BIG SOUTH
  • Charleston Southern won three tight sets in a 3-0 win at Gardner-Webb.
  • High Point worked with ease in a 3-0 victory over USC Upstate.
  • Winthrop defended their home court in a 3-0 sweep over Presbyterian.
